Of course it's possible. The question is, when exactly do you want this game releasing? I personally would rather play this game single player and finished, than still be playing the beta for the next year while they code a brand new winsock segment to the game, and completely change the entire battle system so that it sends all the variables required over this newly coded winsock system. Have you any idea just how much coding is required to add MP to an SP game? It's easy enough when you start out with the intention of doing MP; you can do the MP at the same time as the SP. Adding it later, on the other hand...
EDIT: Although, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing an expansion at a later date, as has already been suggested many times. Even if it were a third-party coded expansion.
