What i used to so was Putting everyone with a shield in i, my skirmishers in ii, the falxmen in III, cavalry in iv and the newbies (Rank 1 and 2) in VIII. This allowed me to Control where my shield Wall is, let my recruits survive and especially keep an eye on my falxmen.

Could you Tell us how you Level leadership? With an army or without? If without how so you keep morale high enough?

Mace, shield, 2 throwables (mostly javelins) in foot. The battanian Starter is very good for this with Low weight snd reasonable Protection. At the Moment i Use a Spikes highland mace. Others maces are to slow

These are mostly hillmen. These are doable. The brigands can bei nasty. The Same hideout for forest bandits would be very deadly.

Good for what is the question. For a Trader the above is a good build. For a Tournament Fighter Not so much. There is No clear answer. I prefer Charm and roguery. Trader increases by itself over the game
