Update: the save file has been resurrected by the latest patch! The quest now completes and conversations are possible. I had made another character and everything, and a couple hours later, my first is returned to me! Happy to be exploring Calradia with both of them now.
I hope others had their saves restored too! Take a look!

I had the same thing today as well.

Now I cannot interact with any other NPCs. Every time I do, they display dialogue, but display the persuasion system (one day I'll get to use it haha) and the conversation cannot be continued or exited. I am afraid the entire save file is being killed by this. :/

I have had the same glitch and have it persist even after reloading, but I didn't run ahead--the villager and I interacted fine, and then I reloaded because the conversation path was not well previewed (it looks like you are locked in from the first equivalent choices into what you are persuading or doing). When reloaded, the conversation lockup commenced.
