I understand that this is an older post but I just wanted to say I had the same problem on an ATI radeon hd 3870 x2.  I solved this problem by actually rolling back my drivers rather than updating.  This unfortunately isn't the first game I have had trouble with when trying to update my video drivers and therefore I run a rather old driver version.
