  1. Losing morale while at sea

It doesnt make a lot of sense given that people were sailing between continents on journeys that lasted months at a time.. whereas you're only island hopping for a few hours here or there. Especially for members of a standing army stationed in countries that straddle those islands, when merchants can cross and float around at will. No big deal but it is inconsistent.
  2. Archers at front with hold position order

I'm much happier with native formations, I can sort everything out on any terrain in about ten seconds. Having the computer fiddling with my orders complicates the hell out of things. I think I'm pretty well used to it by now, but it's still a headache I'd rather be without.

Well, it's obviously not Attila's, considering it's a Magyar sabre (Magyar as a type, not as production, though it seems to fit in this particular case as well), which appeared several centuries after Attila's death (around the same time sabres first appeared in Europe in the first place, while the Huns etc. used various kinds of swords).
    It is.
Even the wiki article says it clearly.

"There is no evidence to substantiate these medieval claims of its origin with Attila; the sword, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, as part of the Habsburg Schatzkammer, in fact appears to be the work of ninth or tenth century Hungarian goldsmiths."  :???:

people are entitled to their opinion if they feel that the game does not live up to the standard they expected. however this does not entitle them to whine and act like a petulent child on forums. constructive criticism is fine but *****ing and moaning is not constructive.
How constructive, then, is *****ing and moaning about the *****ers and moaners? I understand what you're saying, and I agree, but you've got to recognize that there's a double standard here. The same way no cares when a smoker tells you to quit smoking.. no one really cares when a bunch of whiners tell you to quit whining. If you want to spark a constructive argument, based on real terms, on this games actual merits and flaws.. do that. And ignore the whining. That's what grown-ups do.

Edit; If you're not talking about anyone in specific, don't quote a post? I had never voiced my opinion on WF&S until this morning. 'Silent majority'? Well gee whiz, that's a fancy term, I better crack open my encyclopedia. Of course, the fact that people are playing it has nothing to do with how often, how long, or how much they like the game. I myself have played it for some.. oh.. three hours, today alone, trying to get over the negative impressions. I'd rather not've completely wasted my money, you know? So I'm trying.

You rarely phrase a genuine argument in the form of a question, sometimes you have to make a statement to be rebutted. That's how the process works, that's how we reach an understanding. If your sole complaint is that I didn't explicitly state that it was my opinion, fine. Next time I'll be sure to scribble some liner notes in the margins for you.

As an aside, that second bit in the post you quoted? 'Seriously, poke around. I'm not arguing based on how much I enjoy a game, I'm arguing on it's structure, it's stability, the degree to which it seems to excel. It hasnt been extraordinarily buggy, but it's been consistently a stuttering, underwhelming experience. '

..is the basis of 'my opinion', and it's what you have to debunk if you want to prove that 'my opinion' isnt fact.

Seems to me people expect so much from this game because you have to pay for it. I don't really care how it stacks up to warband, I care about how it stacks up to the free mods floating around. They say flat out this is worth your money because it's a professional level mod, but if you poke around even a little bit you can find better for free. That's aggravating. People are going to complain.

Then again, that's just your opinion.

I don't get why people like you think their opinion reigns supreme over every one elses.

Just because you think there are better mods doesn't mean everyone else does.

No one made you buy the game, you should have waited for the reviews.

This game has been out a week, we don't need to see the same people posting the same **** day after day.

Goes both ways, what makes your opinion more valid? Who are 'people like me'? We just met.

Just because you dont think there are better mods doesn't mean that everyone else doesn't. I'd think the volume of 'haters' speaks for itself a bit. Again, man, if people are upset, they're going to say that they are. Listen to the reasonable arguments peppered in the huge vat of hostile bull****, maybe think about why people are so upset?

How else, besides yelling, do you communicate that you feel like you've been blatantly ripped off? 'Wait for the reviews', yeah, right! The review of With Fire & Sword, by john doe in that magazine that one fella with the hat prints in his basement?

you mean before it was sold in stores?
  10. Why are there no cannons ?

Something very similar was actually already done for the original M&B (what WF&S is basically played in). I cant remember the exact name of the mod, but it's defining feature was siege warfare, with different kinds of catapults, a trebuchet, a variety of payloads, siege crews.. an overland map penalty. They were expensive, time consuming, and not very accurate at all, but you could have as many as either three or five. The mod had a morale system built in to boot. They never won an engagement for me and they could occasionally misfire and kill anyone I put near them. Still the most fun I've had with M&B to date.

I remember the computer used them too, sometimes even had more than you did. Frustrating to take losses from that range, but it seems like it would work really well with muskets/cannons.

e; Thinking a little longer, I think there were exploding barrels, big rocks that would roll a bit after they landed, and like a half dozen smaller rocks for a wider punch. Each of those smaller rocks would roll when they hit, too, killing and wounding anything a short distance in front of the impact site. Didnt roll up hills, rolled down hills faster.. killed horses before horsemen.. it was just a hell of a thing. Like I said not accurate enough to hand you a fight, but it was reliably frightening and entertaining.
  11. The New Mercenary Faction: Simulate your own Faction (+Screenshots)

    Very nice.

Just as an fyi, the tweak in the op can be used to spawn townsmen to recruit rather than the array of mercs currently on offer (change the blue sections to 360287970189639706 and 360287970189639707, respectively). Makes sense kind of, some guys are out of work, decide to become mercs, you take em on and train em and all that.

  13. New couched lance: too awkward

I think it's about right, actually. The lance has great reach, just use it the old fashioned way. That's how I get most of my kills. I only bother to couch a lance if I need to take out a horse or break shield or something. The lance does plenty of damage on it's own, and it does that from a safe distance. You can kill faster with, say, a bastard sword, but you're much more likely to go down in the process.

I agree that it should be harder to block, though. A sideways club shouldnt stop you.
Assuming you have the right stats, you can kill faster with a 1-hander, a 2-hander, and a bow; none of those are more dangerous to use since you can do "drive-bys" better than you can with a lance, and even if you try to plow into the enemy they are safer (except for the bow) because you have a chance of hacking your way out.  By faster I mean the amount of time it takes between you thinking "I want to kill that unit" and the point at which that unit is dead, is shorter for all those weapons compared to a couched lance (on average).  I'm not sure about the crossbow due to slow reload, nor thrown weapons due to poor accuracy even at high stats.

The reason is because it is very easy to miss with the lance (or have it drop out of couch) and takes a long time to set up another kill.  In tournaments you have to run to one end of the arena and hope the footman didn't decide to follow you or you won't have enough distance to couch.  The lance should be one of the ultimate weapons.  Instead, the bow would be if it weren't for shields, so it ends up being a 1-hander or 2-hander (1-hander mounted is fast and racks up kills, 2-hander on foot is fast and racks up kills).  The lance simply doesn't have a place.  You can try using it for kicks, but that's all it is... if you wanted to get serious you'd switch weapons.

EDIT: I'm talking about SP games here, but something tells me the same applies to MP... I doubt the lancers are the ones getting the kills... most likely it is footman with the 2-hander, or the hidden snipers.

You are, apparently, really, really bad with a lance. I dont mean to disparage you with that comment, either. I didn't use polearms at all in native, and I can nail a guy in the face with every single thrust now. I find that with a lance nothing can really get at you unless you're careless. I dont have to worry about spears, pikes, or heavy cavalry, and the momentum you get from riding on horseback assures lethality.

You can swing faster with a short weapon, sure, and they're more useful on foot, but on horseback nothing beats the lance. You just need to practice more.

Try not to give a **** about couching, too. I'll use it if I feel like using it, but I have never once needed it, not ever.

Its just a matter of strategy. Make sure to use your commands: Tell all your troops to stand on a hill, put your cav a little to the side so they can flank. When enemy comes close send forward your infantry then charge with the cav from sides or behind.
