Maybe not too unorthodox, but it's a meat grinder.
It's a pretty move, works even more beautifully when not fighting too much cavalry.
1. Position your gigantic line of sharpshooters on a plain
2. Position your gigantic line of sergeants JUST behind them
3. Position your knights to the side

Let's say you're facing a 300 man army, with battlesize tweaker, of course

-Let the army slowly march toward you, hold fire.
-When they're close enough that every single crossbow bolt will hit, let your shooters fire

-As the army gets closer, advance your sergs 10 paces, they'll be fighting wounded and dying forces, more meat grinding
-As your cowardly evemies start routing, let your knights charge and slaughter the weak bastards.

The Merc faction could have a town for themselves somewhere in the middle of the map, there you could recruit a bigger number of mercenary units than from other towns, and the throne of the town would belong to whoever's in charge of the mercenary parties (signing contracts FOR some of the lower grade parties, running the city), someone you could become!

Executing lords should only be permitted to do with with your own vassals, I don't really care about killing off enemies.

Yeah, but they`re not as long and you can`t brace them as real pikes, pike formations would be so much fun
