It's actually somewhat easy to take castles as the Imperial State. The armies generally have a huge amount of guards and if you order your troops to hold position, they'll decimate the defenders over time. Castles with ladders as the siege option are a piece of cake. However, castles with siege towers are extremely difficult to capture.

I think Guardians meant Gunfreak was talking about the revolution when he talked about bayonets. However, I don't think little details like that are very important overall.
