That was always my experience in the past. Rhodok infantry actually performed poorly against cavalry, but Nords would absolutely butcher them if you ordered your men to "stand closer" a few times. Pike/spear infantry in WFaS seem to do a bit better against cavalry than they do in Warband, and that's one thing I'd like to see reverse-ported (along with some of the new battlefield commands).

That would be nice to see pole arms and spears come into their age.  I would really like to see an infantry only mod of some sort, or a mod that puts infantry over cav.

Pike and Blade! Does change the troop tree though. A lot of people say it makes the game so much better teamed up with Diplomacy

To train your men quicker you could invest trainer skill in you and your companions (but it's a bit late now) or do sparring practice at training fields, slower, but works all the same.

I have a feeling you'll do just fine with an army that size

Beating Kerghits at their own game.
Theres nothing like shooting the horse from underneath a Kergit horse archer before turning around to mow him down atop your heavy courser.
I swear shooting out horses from my own is the most satisfying feeling I've had in the game.

One time, when I was playing as the Rhodoks, we were at peace with the sarrinds. I couldn't wait to have a go at the Sarrinds. Eventually, we declared war! I ventured out into Sarrind land to see if there were any easy castles. Almost immediately I was mobbed by about three lords. My poor spearmen didn't stand a chance with those Mamelukes. And, with my shield wall gone, my crossbow men were easy targets.

Stupid Sarrinds!
