When you become a mercenary for a faction, you don't get a fief, but you do get paid. If you visit the faction leader every week he will hand over your money.

If you miss one week he saves up the money to give you.

As a merc for a faction, you can ask the king to become a Vassal. If you have distinguished yourself enough, the King will agree, and, after you take an oath, you get a small fief, but you no longer get paid. You are expected to maintain troops from the income from your fief.

I'm told that after three months of a merc. contract, the contract ends and you can either go off or renew the contract, but I'm yet to do that.

As a vassal, you can ask to be released at any stage. I assume you lose your holdings, but I haven't done this myself.

- I know weapon proficiencies go up outside of leveling
- I know weapon master increases the rate at which you gain proficiencies
- I want to know what the cost of buying proficiencies when leveling is based on.

I wish people would read the question.

I could... but I think my current character is an arrogant SOB, I may feel like burning my bridges. Hell, the Swabian king should be *honoured* to have me fighting for him!!

Look out, altough you'll stop serving for that factions, your enemies will remain your enemies.

Also, as long as you are mercenary, talk with king every week for you payment. Not much money, but still

Mercenaries gots to get paid 

I'm happy to live with my enemies, I haven't yet experimented with trying to repair relationships yet.

3 months doesn't sound so bad, at the end of that time, do I get chucked out automatically? Or do I need to ask to be released?

Thanks for the responses. It doesn't sound like I'm going to get an answer. I understand what Weapon Master does.

This is the thing I'm trying to understand:

When I have points to spend on weapon proficiency from a level up and I spend them on say Polearms, which might be at 93, the first point might cost me 1, then the next costs me 2 or 3.

At the next level when I spend on Polearms again (at 95 for example) the first point might well cost me 1 again.

Its very confusing as the cost seems to change depending on how many points you spend in a particular level.

Clearly I need to do some experimenting with levels to see if I can work out how cost is being calculated, but its clearly not based on something more than just Current Prof and Weapon Master levels.

It makes what ever weapon you decide better. So if you increase archery by 100 points then your bound to be skilled in it. Your Weapon master "perk" is what influences the level cap- for proficiencies and how easy it makes it to level up.

I'm not complaining, or saying that it costs too much. I just want to know how the costs are calculated.
