I was quite frustrated with the game at first, after unfortunate losses and massive loan debts...
But after reading how to make easy money (abusing velvet caravans) it's much more satisfying

. The economic side of the game definitely needs to be looked at because apart from caravans (which are far too easy) it's nearly impossible to make enough money for upkeep, let alone being able to afford to equip your hero and companions.
With firearms the combat is much more brutal, but thanks to the mercenary camps it's much easier to replenish your forces and because the equipment upgrades are separate from a unit's experience level it's much less painful to lose troops. Very expensive though

which takes us back to the money problems.

You can do quite fine without ever sending caravans. I've sent maybe 3 in my entire campaign so far and I have plenty of money.
How did you make your money? I'd really like to know a way other than caravans. Most quests only seem to award between 200 and 600 thaler, and combat tends to cost me more in replacing troops than it earns me in loot.
