Where did that come from? I haven't seen any troop trees posted, did I miss something?

In any case that is correct, I assume they will be a unit selection as part of the English army.

I read earlier that they were to be recruited from taverns.  (I'm not really being that picky, just stirring the pot!)

Hessians weren't mercenaries... they were more like, borrowed

Basically, back when germany was an un-united conglomeration of midget states, several had a disproportional sized army.  So, in order to gain combat experience and fame for there regiments, many princes/dukes/electors figured they'd let old uncle George borrow there men for a while for really no more then there upkeep.

So were they supported by the crown of England - yes.

Were they paid any more than usual, or personally gaining from the venture? - no, they were professional soldiers who went where their officers told them to go.

    States that contributed "Hessians"

    Hesse-Cassel
    Brunswick
    Hesse Hanau
    Anspach-Bayreuth
    Waldeck
    Anhalt-Zerbst

Ok, Ok, all this is great stuff and all, but their still is one thing that, and forgive me if this has already been covered, hasn't really been toched on in a WHILE.

Is artillery still in the cards?  If so will it work off the same principles as "Age of Machinery" - were in order to get seige engines you would hire engineers and they would build them for you.

    Thanks,

    In regards to cannon:

anything larger than 6pdrs were largely unused in America.  The style of fighting just didn't warrent it.  Also, officially, most Battalions had 2 "battalion guns" assigned to them.  These were normally 3pdrs.  These, and all guns, were not under the juristiction of the Army, but instead that of the Royal Ordenance Bureau - aka the Royal Aritillery.  Uniforms Blue (just in case you get the time to make gunners!)  As far as the cannon model goes, my skills are slim to non - so I won't be at all picky, but the barrel seems a bit big in diameter.

Oh, one more thing...  Don't let the title "Foot Artillery" fool you, all guns were transported by horse.  The difference between Foot Artillery and Horse Artillery is how the gunners moved.  Either riding or marching.  Generally Horse Artillery was a very light calliber (3 or 4pdrs) - the idea was that they could keep up with the dragoons who could dismount and serve as an advanced infantry force, skirmishing with light artillery support.

    Keep up the good work!!

Ok, First off DON'T BASE HISTORY OFF MEL GIBSON!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be WRONG every TIME!!!!

Anyway, The Americans won (sorta) through nothing short of Luck and Attrition of the enemy.  The British greatly undervalued the fighting ability of their foes - which wasn't that great anyway.

In my opinion, the British lost that war in Britain.  It was a very unpopular war, across an Ocean (logistical problem) and wasn't fully supported by either house of parliment.  Also, their full might wasn't really reflected on the colonies - they could have sent twice as many troops as they did.

So, in my opinion, Britain lost the war more than America won it.

Where am I basing my history on Mel Gibson?

You do have a point there. Though they their navy started out strong, sadly for them we started driving their ships into shallow water and stealing them when they sailed north of boston. Sadly the learned not to sail north after a while.

@ Drake: lol, you weren't really, thats jus a BIG pet peeve of mine.

@ Everyone:  Baron Frederick Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben - a bad commander?  Dude, he was a Prussian Captain, thats like the American (at the time) equvilent of like, a Major General or somthing!!

And in the end, all that matters is that he kicked ass and drilled the troops to perfection!  Besides, it was a different enviroment, different society.  And I dare say it may have been... acceptable.

Well, Grant was a drunk, worked out for him!  (But thats a whole nother argument!)

Also, I agree, enough.  argument over.  (my appologies for exacerbating it more)

Anyway...  Great mod, Hope you got the cocked hat thing straitened out! (if you didn't no biggy, just *****in' on my part)

Sorry - normally I'm pretty quick to jump on people for that, now I'm guilty as charged!!

ok, great. So you mean that basically each party will only have one kind of troop?  That makes much more sense, but how will AI artillery be handled?

Also, will it be possible to divide up the men under your command?  That is to say tell your Fusiliers to go here, your grenadiers to go their, etc.  Instead of just orering Infantry, Cavalry, etc. around.

    Thanks,

Great Job Dain, and anyone else working on the mod - I have been checking up almost daily for the past year and a half!

Must say - anticipation for this mod is HIGH!!!!!

Anyway, I do have 2 questions.....

    1.  My PC is well, crap.  I can play M&B OK, but it has a hard time with smoke, will their be some sort of light smoke patch for those with crappy machines like me?  (I believe that "Age of blackpower had something like that, but I never got into that mod - they just couldn't pick an era!)

    2.  I see you have done lots of troop work, but I hate nothing more than to come upon a lord who has 10 cavalry guards, 3 knights, 18 archers, 24 infantry, and a splash of everything else on god's green earth.  Soooooo, my question is, will the lords have dedicated troop allocations?  That is to say will one command Infantry and maybe some artillery, another cavalry, etc.

I just think it would be kinda gay to have to fight 25 Volunteers, 3 dragoons, and 16 Irish Volunteers with some pesants in their.

    Thanks,

    Dave
  13. Liberty or Death - Public Beta Released!

Great job, really I am very happy to see this mod open again!

Someone mentioned earlier that the uniforms were "not quite their cup of tea", frankly, I think that the actual uniforms themselves are pretty good and that dain shows some real talent for that kind of stuff.

The real issue is the hats.  The new Light foot helm is great, and the work from that could easily be turned into a tarlton, but those tricorners need a bit of work.

I am sure I'm not the first one to notice this, and forgive my pickyness, but they really need to be COCKED HATS, not Tricorners.

    Ex:

    Tricorner: http://www.hauntedventures.com/2007NEWTEMPLATES/PirateCostumes/DeluxeTricornHat.jpg

    Cocked Hat: http://cockedhats.com/images/brit_cocked_08_zaod.jpg

Notice the difference on how the peak is at the front.  The tricorner can still be in the game for malitia and such, but ALL british "hat" companies worer cocked hats and most continental regulars did, as the the French.

Thats not to say that Tricorns are not of the period, because they are, just from a military standpoint, the cocked hat is much more correct.

Anyway, I'm not a skilled modler or modder, so just my 2 cents...
  14. Liberty or Death - Public Beta Released!

    FANTASTIC!!!

WOW, that really made my day when I say that this mod was alive again!  I had so much fun with it back in the days of .903!  I can't even imagine how awesome it'll be now, just with those little changes mentioned by Nethros!

Great job guys - Really hope to see this one work out!
