Don't bother. The game doesn't even use them when you're conducting sieges, even if you assign them to the clan engineer role. It's currently bugged and needs to be fixed.

Seconding this. Engineer companions currently have pathetic intelligence as of patch 1.09 (all of the ones I have encountered are at 1 or 2). In addition, if your intelligence is higher that theirs, you won't even use them when building sieges. I have an 80 skill engineer with 1 intel, while I am at 10 engineer skill with 4 intel, and I'm the one building siege camps...

On a side note, all the engineers that I have encountered have pathetic intelligence. The game needs to seriously fix how they are generated. They should be having like 6 intelligence at a minimum instead of 9 strength and 6 endurance (like mine currently has). I checked out other engineers and they are pretty much the same (Poor intelligence for an engineer?).

BUMPING THIS. Having the same exact issue. Working with patch 1.09 so this has not changed as it is some kind of bug in the game. I have even assigned my companion as the clan engineer and swapped her in and out again to debug it, but she still won't build anything during sieges. The game is currently running off of my siege skill, which is a pathetic 14 (compared to her 80). This makes having her as a companion almost completely useless.
