    B Oriental Kengeki Gaiden

I have just downloaded the mod yesterday after a few months break playing the M&B. The mod is awesome - especially animations. And it is not bugged like other modes (Shogun). The choice of weapons is awesome: I like O-Dachis and Ninja armor - and here they are. So first of all thanks for the great work.

But since I had a lot of experience playing other mods, I would like to share my thoughts on the possible improvements:

Realism (I know it is rather a cinematic mod, but this concerns fighting mechanics):
    1) Shurikens overpowered (both range and damage). Originally this weapon is not designed to deliver lots of damage, but to cause pain and destraction.
    2) Connected to the first one  - the scripted injury shock would solve the problem. When the enemy recieves lots of non-lethal damage he is likely to be stuned for several seconds. Would be nice for the non-lethal katana strikes too, since this looks stupid when you deliver the swing to the opponent's body and he continues atacking you like nothing happened. This kind of injury was implemented in the 1866 mod for the first M&B - so that the bullet injury would stun enemies like in the films, when they got shot at and stay there looking where to fall down . Fits with the samurai theme pretty well too. Just look for the proper code in the 1866.
    3) Thrown wakizashi can't do more damage than a thrusting atack by it hand-held. This is just not right.  Lower the damage - it would still be beneficial to throw wakizashi if you implement no. 2. since it will stun the opponent giving you some time to get in close and finish him with the katana strike.
    4) I believe, that the large (two handed only) swords are under-powered (those should by no means do less damage vs. naginatas ect. - since naginatas were designed as the cheaper versions of large swords). Maybe you can tweak this a bit to make them usefull - at present they are not better than the best one/two handed katanas, though obviously longer (which in my book means more damage due to the wider arc of the strike).

    Shields:
Using off-hand katana and wrist-guard as a shield is fine idea, I love it. But those shouldn't block arrows. You can't block arrows with those really  And there were special shields to protect from arrows in Japan:
    http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSM0riIs4Z8rHabkxlBwmZ8QfkxeW6E1NEwl2b1BY91gTmiG5vV
Here is the historical reference link:
    http://books.google.ru/books?id=eyMYelZlKekC&pg=PA89&lpg=PA89&dq=medieval+japanese+shields&source=bl&ots=mqxAuufNZ8&sig=TlBlgqLqaq3npjev6EMvrykb5n4&hl=ru&ei=mppnTsrCJIzt-gawhfDuCw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CEEQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=medieval%20japanese%20shields&f=false
Basicaly those are the tower shields used during sieges and large battles to protect from arrows. Those should really be introduced into the mod. Make them cumbersome, so that one would want to drop it as soon as he got into the proximity of archers, rather than carry it over the back.

Basicly that's it.  It would be nice to see the japanesse castles/taverns ect. instead of the european ones though.
Thanks for the great work again.

If you feel some words are impolitely, I suggest you just don't use them. Then you don't have to ask for an excuse, either.

The bank is something that needs improvement, I agree. There will hopefully be some innovations, when we have time to work on it.
Though you it won't be marching into a town with 50 men like Peralta suggested. No incognito robbing either.

Judging from other feetback, the bank robbing as it is right now, is certainly not too hard.

... I would keep this in mind. It was just... the bank robbery thing felt so much in contrast with the awesomely made mod... so I kinda expressed my emotions  ...   ... so how about implementing arsenal robbery thing?

I've tried robbing the bank. The whole system sucks. Excuse my language....

    1) Why is it bank robbing is related to faction reputation at all? I couldn't have robbed the bank before I got messed up with the lawmen. The robbers would use masks and kill guards, so most of the times none will see their faces. Why not to allow anybody to try the robbery (not only lawmen enemies) and possibly make the chance of rep. deterrioration <100% (if possible)?

    2) After the bank is robbed - you are left in the center of the street ALONE with enemies all around you, and you have to run for the cover if you want to survive. Robbing the bank ALONE and going out to the center fo the street after the robbery are 2 stupidiest possible things to do - why do you do this to players? Are you against bank robbing or what? -)))

I would suggest to make it similar to the second and third stages of the siege in original M&B.
    1) You start with a few men (logically those should be taken from the top of your troops list) behind the cover (building or something).  Bank is the building with interior (like the Saloons). You goal is to kill the bank guards and enter the bank.
    2) You get to the robbing screen and loot anything you want. I suggest adding high grade weapons to the loot (there is always a stash of weapons for the defending party + you can get some from the dead guards). Robbing police stations and sherifs for weapons - was always an option for the organaised criminals.
    3) You start safely inside the bank with a few men and some incomming guards are put on the streets outside. You have to kill them. Tada!

I would also suggest adding Armory robberies (like robbing National Armory or something).  The idea is the same. But the opposition would consist of highly trained millitary and you get lots of highest garde weapons and ammunition as a loot. Can be very proffitable and much of a fun.

Yeah... this is funny... I believe you have 90 to 10% chances of getting a bullet in your back rather than getting into any duel at all in the old west.   I believe the western duels are a part of spagetti westerns, rather than realty. Bandits and outlaws of the period had no brain to think of honour or anything of a kind...

Another suggestion (might have been proposed already) - MAKE SHERIFS AND LAW PROTECTORS TO HUNT DOWN OUTLAW PLAYERS! -)
I've robbed half of the available area without any objections from anybody ... lol ... it's so easy...
How about ambushes set in the villages you raid often? Small groups of bounty hunters catching you of-guard in the cities and imprisoning you in case they succeed? Would be fun. Especially if the moders will add preason break fight.

Agree completely. Dual-wielding revolvers would not allow for
    1) Aimed shooting
    2) Fast-shooting (as in case with early revolvers you have to pull back the trigger by hand. So basicly you will end up with two single-shots in both hands.  ha ha
The only proper way to use 2 pistols is to shot one, than quickly switch to another.

BTW - this made me think about another suggestion. FAST-SHOOTING is already present in game. Wohau! Kewl!
Yet the initial arc of fire for pistols accurately represents accuracy of a deadly drunk Irish man. Make the arc of fire more realistic. You can't really miss the guy from 1 meter even if you do carelessly fastshot the whole magasine. I feel stupid fastshooting and missing opponent who reaches me with a knife.

For example, a mounted rifleman has to make a decision between sacrificing extra ammuntion for a melee weapon...

Why is that he or she HAS to? Most historical troops of the period had some backup meele weapon just in case. Why to sacrifice a slot for a small knife?

If troops are given access to large amounts of ammunition, then melee weapons will play an even smaller part than they do now.
I wonder, why is that I have to shoot the bad guy running at me with his pocket knife 3 times from my revolver to stop him and to be killed by his friend's stub as I've run out of ammo?
I wonder, why they have invented the pistols at all, when the melee weapons are so powerfull? =))))
Eastwood should have used knife, really.

If I had to guess, I think this is more of an issue of rifles actually being crossbows and pistols being... well... pistols.  Rifle ammo is actually crossbow bolts and pistol ammo is bullets.  I'm pretty sure ammo types are hard-coded, making it impossible to mix and match ammos and weapon types (such as bows shooting throwing axes).  This is also why pistols and long guns have separate proficiencies; long guns are actually crossbows.  'Course I could be wrong, but that's my bet.

If both pistols and rifles use the same balistics mechanics, why not to make them all... say crosbows ... and forget about anything esle... so this is possible anyhow
Furthermore  I saw the mods, where you have bows, crossbows, and guns. So the skills system can also be tweaked with.

Well the thing is, you could make the larger ammunition rare, and far more expensive. So a case of 36 pistol rounds may cost 10 dollars, while a case of 50 rounds could cost upwards of 50 dollars (In a roleplay sense, you are basically forking out for a much more well made holder for said rounds) and give the larger bullet cases x5 the weight (So running with 150 things of lead on you could slow you down considerably)

Progressive ammo pricing could be used for the sake of balance, but is doesn't make any realistic sence. Winchester rifle weights around 4 kg.  1 Bullet weights around 17 gramms, so one rifle equals to around 200 bullets in weight. You can keep them around your body in bandoliers:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandolier

One of those can store up to 100 bullets. You can simply wear 2 across your chest + 1 as a belt resulting in 300 bullets total. The bandoliers  would cost no more than a dollar or two I guess. The only drawback is bullets weight. Those were widely used during the period. See? 20 bullets in one slot is an unrealistic outrage. =) I doubt large ammo packs would break the balance anyhow, unless you are a paranoid camper, who exploits "corner" trick during the siege.  =)

If it would be my decision I would furthermore elliminate difference between pistol and rifle bullets. There is no difference between calibers anyway. And all this micro-management is not adding to the fun this mod has to offer. In case bullets are universal and come in a large bunches - one can use the rifle + 2 colts and still have enough ammo for a long battle. Which is pretty realistic and a logical thing to do if your are a troublesome type.

balistic vest isn't a good idea... spanish armor will be better  ...and about those wounds, in native M&B are soldiers hit by axes and swords...there aren't any wounds and it's ok so why should they be here?

Balistic west was available during wild west period at the very high cost. It is up to the creator of the mod and other players to decide if it is good idea... -) I belive it is really an option. And 800$ wouldn't come easy to you - would they? This vest wouldn't protect  your head BTW, so you still can be killed - it is not a cheat like top rank full plate mail + tower shield in the original M&B -)))

Regarding wounds - there were no Colt revolvers in the original M&B either, "so why should they be here" in Western M&B?)) The wounds would be nice  - as Western M&B is all about the ranged combat (while original M&B is all about slashing things down  to death - not to tell there are skills like power strike which do make most of your strikes lethal for even heavily armored opponents). The carabine shot on the other hand can't be made more poerful - and when it hits the chest -  won't instantly kill the victim, but will surely put him out of a fight.  Imagine Clint Eastwood having to shot his opponents twice or thrice to kill them, while they continue to shot at him. That just doesn't make any sence. Either the damage for the rifles and revolvers should be increased or the injury and bleeding effects added (second is much more realistic).
  10. Constantinus

    Suggestions

This is an awesome mod! And the realism is pretty high already, though there are several possible improvements that would really improve the process:

    1) Add bleeding. Bullets do piercing damage and often do leave open wounds - which will bleed, making the victim to fall  unconscious soon enough.  It looks stupid when I've just shot the bastard from one of the most powerful rifles for 67 damage and he continues to run fight as if nothing happened.

    2) Add injury. For the same reason. The guy with a bullet in his chest or arm would naturally miss an elephant from the few yards - because it is damn painful and you can't hold the breathe. Injury would decrease all the skills for the percentage of damage you have been dealt - or something and significantly slow the victim down.

    3) Add heavier armors: like oven lid to cover the chest as in Back to the Future film, or something like that -) )) I hate being killed by a random bullet.
The more realistic armors would be:
    a) leather jacket
    b) Ballistic vest. Would cost around 800 USD - but it was historically available. See here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_vest#1800s.E2.80.931930s

    4) More bullets in 1 set (was already suggested) - I believe you can actually carry much more than 20 rifle bullets in one slot.

    5) Duck and kneel (might be impossible to implement).

    6) Increase the party size cap for the lower levels of CHA and Leadership. The troops are much more expensive in the wild west - that's ok. But what will prohibit me from hiring 50 men, not 30 if I get enough money?  It is harder to fight large group of opponents with a small party in Western M&M as you really can be killed by a random bullet any time. In medieval setting your fame and birth might be the case. In the western setting a few bucks make you the king.
You don't actually have to posses any special leadership skills to lead the bunch of outlaws, provided you can pay them and arm them.

Try Expanded Gameplay 2 then tell us about the lack of difficulty. That mod is like challenging Satan at Liar's Dice. Only available for .903, though, but you can always have separate versions of M&B. Like I do.

I would also recommend getting the battlesizer plugin (basically a smaller mod that works with seemingly any version of M&B) then try sieging a castle packed with 400 Nords. Capturing the walls won't be that easy then, because there will be somewhere close to 300 Nords on them and they will have reinforcements. Same goes for field battles. Those really make combined armies useful. I find that about 20 Swadian knights along with about 30 or so Nord Huscarls are an excellent fighting force. Add a few fine archers to boot and you've got yourself a kick-arse army.

I don't like the idea of using battle size changer for sieges without complex sieges improvement. It is not fair at all when you get only 1 Siege ladder and 300 Nords defending walls. Is it?  I can try an assault against castle walls without wearing any armor or fighting with bare hands to make difficulty level challenging "Satan at Liar's Dice". Yet I am talking about realistic challenges.

Crusades in my opinion would be great, cause you have nowhere to run, no cities and castles to rest, no villgaes to recruit troops...ect. Even with the superior army you'll eventually loose your men and will have to survive somehow... ect.

I thought this is the forum for main game improvement suggestions. I am sure moders will do something similar...  Yet I want the core game improved.

I don't see why I would put myself in disadvantage - fighting on foot during open battles if my tactics are so superior?

I've not only tried sieges, but I find them very easy to win. Even too easy. Even if I have 70 lancers I can still win the city with 300-500 defenders, cause you only have to kill 100-170 enemies to capture the walls. And the only thing I have to do is to not allow archers kill my troops while they climb the wall (with my 250+ archery killing enemies on walls is quite easy), then, when I am done with archers I just get to the top of the ladder - jump over the enemies and start reaping defenders with my 2H axe or bardish. This allows my troops to enter the walls and fight without penalty (I usually survive the bloodshed in my full plate armor with 15 to 50% of health left). then all I have to do is either kill enemy reinforsements with my bow, or stay at a safe angle and keep slashing enemies with my bardish. Then 2 easy fights on streets and in the castle, which I can win myself (and I usually have 2-3 helpers during those as well, making the fights peace a cake). Nords are quite easy to kill during sieges, cause they have armor weakness. Only tough situations are when you face full-platers on top of the wall. So I would say swadians are the best defenders and atackers.

I'm all for more challenges for high level players, but the situation you described as unchallenging needs a bit
of clarification, so if you please provide the following info:

1.) What difficult setting were you using?
2.) What Battle Size setting were you using?
3.) What Equipment were you using - horse & armor?
4.) What tactics did you employ? - Edge of map exploit, etc.

    I am level 27 I guess.
    1) Normal damage to player. I guess I've set everything else to normal as well. Should look this up though.
    2) Original .
    3) I use heavy charger, cause it is the only fair speed-armor-charge tradeoff. Full plate mail (simple), reinforsed helmet.
    4) No exploits. My Lancers, Knights just reap through the Nords (and any footmen as well). I personally kill 7-10 enemies during each battle with my two-hander (TH swords, axes and bardishes do pretty well). Th eonly real problem I face are large groups of swadian Men at arms and Knights - which are pretty rare.

So no magic/tricks/exploits about this and I guess difficulty is realistic. I just got equipment/skills/men to kick enemies around.  My companions do heal very well, allowing most of my men to be retained after battle - but this doesn't help my men cut through infantry with ease.

Crusades will limit ability to recruit troops making war - quite a challenge (since you'll have to capture some cities first to be able to recruit locals to your religion).

How about if being trained in a castle/town while garrisoned there would send troops along a different experience path, where the soldiers would start as recruits and move up through ranks like garrison militia, garrison levy, guard, town guard, castle guard, prison guard, warden, guard captain, elite guard, palace guard, khan's guard, etc...but there could only be a limited amount of the higher tier guard/garrison type units, so that you couldn't just wait forever and have tons of elite troops by doing nothing.

In general, troops that would upgrade solely by sitting in a castle (and are on the guard path) would get better and better equipment over time, but would only increase their stats marginally to reflect the fact that they have not experienced real combat. And the really good guard troops, like elite guard or palace guard, would only be available [to be upgraded to from lower tier troops] after your castle had been succesfully defended by those lower tier guard path troops.

And maybe regular troops who had already been upgraded beyond recruit and were no longer eligible for the 'guard' path could just stop upgrading at tier 3 or so when garrisoned, like cloud breaker said.

It's too damn difficult and not in line with the whole experience system. What's wrong with the guys sitting inside castle without any experience and then leveling up during sieges? Or you can sit with them in the castle and train (by moving your experiened troops to castle and taking raw troops into your party, then changing back). The troops won't train themselves, ya know?  The idea of giving unexperienced troops better equipment is good, but that has nothing to do with the garrisoned troops. I also wouldn't like to micro-manage each soldier's equipment. It would be nice to have like - troop type and experience separately.

How about,  you can equip say level 5+ Khergit recruit to be Khergit Lancer just by by paying for his gear in a Castle or City. Then he'll level up and get more tough. ect. This will make old elite troops better then the new ones ect. Though will require to change troops window, cause you would liike to destinguish between new and old Khergit Lancers after that.
