Thanks everyone for the tips. I got around the problem by restarting the game. So far it's going well, except some minor bugs like occasionally the sky above towns turning black, but I can live with that. Sorry if I was too harsh at first, I just got frustrated by encountering an old bug so early on. But I do think this bug should be dealt with as soon as possible, because let's admit it, if half of the time the game freezes before people are even able to start playing the game, then fixing this issue should be a top priority for the developers.

You should add to your list the fact that the map is a mess. For example, in VC the Netherlands is about one fifth the size of Jutland (Denmark's peninsula), whereas in real life Netherlands is larger than Jutland. Not only this is geographically and historically inaccurate, but it's just absurd. Shetland Islands to the north-east of Scotland do not even exist in this game, despite being a very important viking colony in this era. Sweden, home to a large portion of vikings including Ragnar Lodbrok, is completely missing from the game. At the very least they could make an unplayable area for Sweden, like northern France and Pomerania. And speaking of northern France, Pomerania and northern Norway, they look like as some other person said, I quote, "work in progress." I bet there are even more inaccuracies in the VC map, these are just the ones I have noticed in my first 20 minutes into the game.

In my opinion, the DLC as a whole is still playable. But it is geographical and historical inaccuracies like these that greatly reduce the quality of the game and feel as if the people who were making it were either too lazy or just didn't care.

My vote is tentative, obviously.  I just can't believe they would release it as finished with mutant kids and stuff like that.  The male characters look much improved over vanilla but the woman and children. . .me and my kids were cracking up laughing about it but that's not good for immersion.

I burst out laughing when I talked to one of the kids, the boy had the same face as my character. Children with adult faces. Mutants indeed.

Oh, Viking Conquest DLC is in deep beta now is it? Because i was led to believe it was in final release when we paid money for it. This isnt a beta.

We're not beta testers. My *minumum* expectation of a game or DLC you pay money for is that it works, regardless of my view on the gameplay, story or mechanics that's my only expectation.

Not just Scandinavia, have you seen the Friese region (today's Netherlands)? It's about 1/5 the size of the real place and overall looks just wrong. Not even to mention that it's a playable area so this region should at least be somewhat geographically accurate. Of course bug fixes should be the first priority now, but I really hope they will do something about the map.

You raise a valid point, but somehow I really doubt this is the case. There are many medieval-themed or ancient-themed games out there, nearly all of them (if not all) use modern geographical maps. Perhaps there were technical limitations which made them decide to sacrifice the geographical accuracy of this region. Or maybe like Pamper_Me said, for some reason they decided that investing their time in creating a proper map for this region is just not worth it. Or maybe there is another reason. It's just that for people like me who are a bit familiar with the geography of Europe, it seems odd. So I hope the developers clarify their reason for this quite serious geographical inaccuracy.

This thread should be a sticky and its link emailed to all of the developers.

I like the concept and some features of this DLC, it looks like it has potential. But to release it in the current state is just embarrassing. It feels like I paid money for a mod made by amateurs, not a "DLC". I hope the developers will listen to the advice and use the tips from this thread to fix their product.

Not really. In the 9th century it was pretty much the same like today. The only difference is that the Dutch reclaimed some land from the marshes, so it added some landmass to the inner Netherlands, however it doesn't change the fact that the Netherlands was always roughly the same size like Denmark's mainland. And that is not even to mention northwest Germany in this DLC, which is pretty much nonexistent.
