What file do I have to edit to have merchants carry a lot more money than they currently have?

In addition to the usual crashes, I also got a new crash to report - occasional when I'm recruiting units or taking prisoners, the game will crash and corrupt the game save.  This happens regardless of what unit I'm trying to "get", but it appears to happen at random times.
