Companion spawns seem to be random. I've done really simple tests just by starting a bunch of new games and comparing how many spawn at the beginning, though more companions will continue to spawn throughout the game, and there doesn't seem to be any patterns in my experience. Quite certain it's not a bug for you to have 0 trade companions, as I don't think there are minimums, it's more than likely just bad luck.

Good idea, it would definitely be nice to have more neutral sites throughout the map, also more training fields that you could actually use to train your companions or troops like in Warband.

Agreed. It would be cool to be able to interact with your soldiers more dynamically than just issuing commands, possibly implementing a few abilities such as a war cry to increase your morale or a taunt to decrease enemy morale. Maybe they could add a leadership perk to increase the effectiveness of the abilities.

Seems like gang leader quests are outright useless at the moment. Increasing your relation with one notable, especially an unimportant one since gang leaders tend to be the least powerful type of notable, isn't worth gaining a criminal rating with a kingdom or losing relation with another notable.
