noob questions regarding combat.

hey guys. i have played a bit of MnB (mostly offline) and when i am online i go for archer or shield bearer (aka distract someone so my ally can get an ez kill) is there any kind of guide on combat? its a bit frustrating for me.... i slice someone  with a fast weapon and somehow miss and then they hit me with a heavy 2hand weapon and kill me. what gives?
 
cheers this helps a lot. but my issue is more of a i swing... my sword/axe cuts right through him yet misses... then i get stabbed. maybe its a ping issue? not sure really... but super annoying.
