An army can be greater in number, better trained and exceptionally equipped, but without the will to fight, none of that matters. Conversely, high morale can see people through extreme hardships, giving them the determination to press on and continue the fight long after all hope is lost, only to grasp victory from the jaws of defeat.

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/128

I'm disliking many things on Bannerlord too but i would not be that hard and say there is nothing new and it's just a Warband reskin. You have the barter system who is a great feature and can be use in every negociation, the realistics economics. The morale system is known to be very bad in Warband and this one looks far better with this possibility of chain reaction, meaning if you can create a shock point with an elite unit you could break a frontline and make and army start to disband. The houses system is great and add vassality feature in M&B which is not present at all in Warband. You also have an engine that could use at least six cores when Warband can only use one, and a far better battle size !

I totally agree and understand people can be unhappy with the development time, but we have to be fair ^^

I notice in the screenshots that the human proportions are good now contrary too many things i've seen in the past, did you rework them ?

Can you get semi permanent boosts or decreases to morale If you are honourable or deceitful? Like soldiers will like fighting under a commander with a good reputation more than under one who is known to cut and run?

yeah, yeah... got the same question

To those saying the morale system is the same as warband, I do not believe the warband system was as dynamic as this in the middle of battles. I've played so many hundreds of hours of warband, and for the most part the ONLY time my force ever experienced anyone "breaking" was only at the very end when I'd been decimated. I'm rather confident that the morale system there was simply a check of morale against the percentage of force remaining and once it hit a certain point, everyone ran.

If events during a fight such as formations can have an impact, then I can also see certain units simply being present having an impact, with higher trained fighters having higher morale/stability and being able to share that, if not by default then that would be a very easy mod to make. So this system as described, if not fully realized in the beginning, has incredible potential.

In short, there's always ignorant people who are unhappy no matter what. :party: :party: :party:

It didn't even release as 1.0 (nor early access) and already, there's "problem solved, case closed = it's a fail" people.

And for one, in Warband, morale was a thing of campaign map that was mirrored into battle map. Quite simple morale system to boot. As Worldsprayer said, this here seems much more dynamic.

At the moment in the gameplay videos I didnt saw any wavering Lines due to Moral hit, it was pretty same like Warband some clashing lines, Cavalry had almost no impact, in the Sandbox gameplay as I saw when they attacked and slaughtered the Infantry the enemy formation kept going towards the players line despite the heavy loses as you can see in the kill feed, they startet only to flee when they where already only a couple of guys left. I hope at that point that the Morale System wasnt fully fleshed out quiet yet but I dont see any difference towards Warband at the moment but keep in mind its my personel perspective others could see this differently.

I have to admit i wasn't impressed too by the gameplay footage i've seen compares to Warband, but maybe the morale system was not completed. Same thing for sieges on the "paper" it looks good but when you see sieges in gameplay vids it's somekind very similar to Warband. We will only have the answer to this feeling in march 2020.

"This morale penalty is modified according to the commander’s skills and perks, and also other factors."

I hope this is hinting towards a significant morale boost for troops during a battle whereby the commander can inspire nearby troops by simply being present and fighting in proximity alongside a formation (probably a passive ability).

IMO this would make situations like a final last stand more interesting and intense, instead of losing to some invisible morale pool game mechanic that suddenly depletes. I would expect at the very least something along the lines of vetaran troops with their commander accompanying them to fight to the very last man and die, if the player wishes it so. Once we factor in the permadeath mechanic and successor alongisde this, I'm all in.

Interesting, in the first pic, to see the falling foot soldier has an arrow in the back of his head; friendly fire?
Good blog. Thanks Callum. It would have been nice to see the campaign map tool tip.

I can’t speak to that specific instance but there is definitely friendly fire. I’ve been shot in the back of the head by my archers in captain mode (beta) because I ran out in front of them while they were firing at another unit.

That arrow was from a horse archer if I remember correctly. The AI is pretty sneaky in battles tbh, so horse archers will constantly be flanking and harassing the enemy, archers will push forward to fire then fall back behind the infantry lines when enemy cav approach, who then, in turn, pull out of their charge rather than run into a shield wall. There is actually a lot going on in battles come to think of it... And soon enough you will get to experience them for yourself!

I've had groundless fears for a long time about how the ia behaves in the videos. Now, even in the images we can see that anomalous behavior... I'm afraid.
Of course, morale is a topic of which we knew nothing and which undoubtedly needed a blog. After the fortnight of waiting, it was worth it. :iamamoron:

I leave you more surrealism to complement this blog, enjoy it. :lol:

Dear Callum don't hate me for saying this but after watching almost all the videos avaiable I'm 100 % sceptical about your statment, we never seen something any close to what your describe.
If something has been done to the AI, just show us please.

I dont see the difference between Warband Morale System and the Bannerlord System, overall with so many Blogs I didnt saw anything really new, despite Siege Engines, some Weapon Crafting (not even Armor Crafting) or the Perma Death feature with kids. I thought Taleworlds mentioned they have many new Features but at the moment I see only a Warband reskin with awful Combat Mechanic and some new Features and only for this they took almost 8 years of development time? I dont want to mention even the Banner System, Combat or Multiplayer overall in my Opinion everything got more simplified and boring I dont see any depth Gameplay Mechanics at the moment.
You can't say bannerlord is just a reskin there's an insane work on the engine for an indie company, the game is bigger than what you think but the problem is that it has been badly directed regarding artistic decisions and overall project managament.
Don't forget morale was bugged in warband so it's like a new thing.

It would be nice to see terrain affecting morale.

For example:

- Wet terrain such as rivers;
- Fighting from lower ground;
- Climbing up a hill (temporary morale drop for unmounted troops in this case);

Shouldn't mounted troops also receive a penalty? I'd imagine that charging uphill, even with a horse, would be pretty bad.
