As is true with most people who play Warband, some of the most common methods of increasing your pocket outside of import/export is trading and slaves. You may have noticed, however, there's not a lot of options for non lethal units for which to knock weak pirates out. I have so far heard no mention of this so I figured I'd throw out the recommendation for newer players looking to earn a living.
I haven't explored this possibility with other nations troops, but British LIGHT Fusiliers come armed with muskets/carbines that you can then order them to use melee (not the blunt only option, they'll punch instead!) And they will rifle butt the enemy directly into your pocket.
Of course, be prepared to lose a lot of men in the process if you charge a battle line of hardened soldiers to try and capture them. I personally only attack pirates with them, who's combat ability is varied.
