A traveller coming over the passes from greener lands would first see fields of dunes broken by gravel plains and volcanic outcrops, shimmering under the heat haze. But there is water to be found underground, trapped in depressions or beneath the wadis where the occasional flash flood rumbles by. And in these oases people have settled. They are divided into dozens of clans and sub-clans, each with its elaborate genealogy, but are collectively known as the Banu Asera or the Aserai after the legendary patriarch Asera, whom they all claim as an ancestor.

[/parsehtml]Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/41

Ah, the Sarranids have always been one of my favourite factions, and the Aserai will probably surpass them. I just love their equipment - it's so colorful and awesome looking. Chances are my first playthrough will probably be with the Aserai, even though the Empire (i've always been a fan or Rome and Byzantine) intrigues me to a high degree as well.

You probably won't do this since you know your history, but just to be sure; do not give them curved swords as curved swords didn't become commonplace until the 14-15th century (maybe even later).

Btw "one of my favorite factions". There were only 6..
Also, with them having curved swords(along with khuzaits) make weapons more interesting

Callum I really need to know this please respond pleaseeeeee :ohdear: :ohdear: :ohdear: :ohdear:

It is so nice that TW noticed a very common historical misconseption:

Mideastern armies are popularly associated with horse archers, but in fact those only became prevalent about two centuries after the founding of Islam with the influx of Turks.

But this one may be even more important:You didnt add any curved swords to Aserai did you ?

Curved swords became a thing in Middle east after the Turkic invasion in approxiamately 11th century.
All the curved swords in middle east, india and balkans originate from Turko-Mongol sabre aka ''kilij''
''The Central Asian Turks and their offshoots begun using curved cavalry swords beginning from the late Hsiung-Nu period.[3] The earliest examples of curved, single edged Turkish swords can be found associated with the late Hsiung-nu and Kok Turk empires.[4] These swords were made of pattern welded high carbon crucible steel, generally with long slightly curved blades with one sharp edge. A sharp back edge on the distal third of the blade known as "yalman" or "yelman" was introduced during this period.
In the Early Middle Ages, the Turkic people of Central Asia came into contact with Middle Eastern civilizations through their shared Islamic faith. Turkic Ghilman slave-soldiers serving under the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates introduced "kilij" type sabers to all of the other Middle Eastern cultures. Previously, Arabs and Persians used straight-bladed swords such as the earlier types of the Arab saif, takouba and kaskara.
During Islamizaton of the Turks, the kilij became more and more popular in the İslamic armies. When the Seljuk Empire invaded Persia and became the first Turkic Muslim political power in Western Asia, kilij became the dominant sword form. The Iranian shamshir was created during the Turkic Seljuk Empire period of İran.[5]
After the invasion of Anatolia this sword type was carried by Turkomen tribes to the future seat of the Ottoman Empire. During the Crusades, Turks of Anatolia were the first target to be attacked by the European armies, and their curved swords were misperceived by Europeans as the imaginative "scimitar of the Saracens", the generic sword type for all "Orientals".

All the early arabic and persian swords were straight swords.

In 11th century Seljuk Turks conquered Iran and Persians adopted curved sword from them and called it Shamshir which basically means sword in Persian.

Early Caliphates converted Turkics to islam and hired them as mercenaries. From them they earnt curved swords.

Indians also learnt curved swords from Moghul dynasty who were descendants of Timur a Turko-Mongol warrior.

Pls taleworlds give curved swords only to Khuzaits and maybe to Strugia.

Edit:Oh I just rushed here but seems like people were already talking about this

Thank you for the dev blog. But what is the likely hood of us getting a single player blog or video? I am more interested in the single player than any other aspect. I hope i am not the only one.

You can see in the image above that they have curved swords.

Curved Swords!

Yup, we all sound like Skyrim Guards now.

... No lollygagging.

but to be fair, they are bending historical norms a little in the Vlandians where it concerns heavy crossbow use. The curved blades of the Asurai are at least more plausible and could have arisen due to the requirements of warfare or through trade and contact with other factions.

Haha, no kidding, the modding in bannerlord will be even better for 5 things(atleast).

1: Modding tools- Can make more stuff, easier, better and faster
2: Game engine- Better game engine- more, better stuff/features
3:Multiple mods at once (if they are compatible!) For example sea battles + diplomacy
4: Bigger Community- Bigger modding community-more and better mods
5:Modding tutorials/easy to mod- even non modders will be able to make their amazing ideas take place!

Also about the curved swords/sabres/scimitars and more;
Mount and blade is historical, but none of the things are totally taken from real life. They are just inspired. Thats why they are called Aserai/Sarranids and not Arabs. Thats why its not real life map. They have said it themselfs multiple times (even in this blog for example that they will use Javelins, which came after the timeperiod its set in) and I think them having a bit curved swords (possibly amongs se straight ones as well(as in Warband)) gives good variation and differention from other factions. Out of 9 factions, 7 have(possibly) straight swords, 1(Khuzaits) have curved, and lastly a good fit imo, 1 (Aserai) could have mixed. Either way, calm the **** down peps, its just a game, and if you want it to be more historically accurate, wait 1 month or so extra for a mod that does that.

Best faction blog...quite fortunate inspiration choice!

EDIT: Whoooa just noticed the cavalry with adargas, you're definitely making our lives easier!

And I know for a fact Steve Negus is involved with the History bit, so here is my question:

Will we be able to write background descriptions/stories and events for characters and cities in order to improve our in game immersion? Perhaps a sort of ingame wiki? Thanks!

Oh and the icing on the cake:

"The Arabs were famously proud of their horses, and the Aserai breeds - produced by pastures in Aserai lands - will have unique characteristics".

Just amazing - for us, horse lovers, a delight. And for those who said horse breeds are a waste of time and called us reality freaks...the name of the game is MOUNT and Blade
Noticed that part too. Could mean horse stamina will be introduced or something.

Wait did they say "FootBow"?? Haven't seen any pics of that but can only imagine the abuse and savagery against vulnerable footbow-man laying down in that position when surrounded by enemies in MP

I have a question for next weeks blog. Will the NPC AI be capable of deception? I'm thinking that it may be interesting and raise the difficulty if NPC's with secret alliances or grudges may send you on quests that end in ambush. Or to lie about the rewards that they are capable of providing after completing their quest. Would a greedy merchant with low morals and knowledge of your fighting prowess attempt to lure you into a trap to turn you into a gladiator-slave?
In Warband, it was possible to have villagers start fires to draw enemy forces out from castles to fight on more favorable terrain. Will there be more options to lure opponents on the world map? Maybe, staged robbery or letters sent for aid...

It would be great if there was a perma-death mode.

Low fantasy be damned. I want muh Firemares.

Also did they mention anywhere that your mount can be killed outright in battle? Never liked the uberhorses of warband.

Sweet, another faction preview! I'll be looking forward to test myself, or join, these wild warriors.

EDITED: And thank goodness they won't be horse archers. I hate horse archers...
