I was thinking of taking the area around Dhirim, anyone have any other places in mind?

If you're thinking of starting your own kingdom, the best place would probably be somewhere in Warband, not in the original game, which does not allow you to create your own kingdom.
That said, if I'm trying to establish a set of forts and villages for a personal fief in original M&B, in the long run I prefer something in Swadian territory because of its centralized location (Dhirim qualifies well enough for that) and easy access to everything else (which means joining a faction that's at war with the Swadians), but in the short run it's easier to hold something in a far corner of the map where you're well off the beaten path.
