My maternal grandfather (Opa) was in the German Army (Afrika Corps) in North Africa.
I come from a long line of fighters. My maternal grandfather was the toughest guy I ever knew. World War II veteran, killed 20 men, then spent the rest of the war in an Allied prison camp.....My grandpa Manheim is 103, and still puttering around in Argentina. I tried to go visit him once, but my travel visa was protested by the Shoah Foundation.

The father of my father's mother was a soldier for 18 years and did not see his family during all these years. Fought many wars and was a huge man who was taller than 2 meters. First war he was in was Sarıkamış (if you can call that a war) and he survived that and later fought nonstop for 18 years.
The father of my mother's grandmother was an Armenian who was captured by the Russians and French during WW1, wore the French uniform and was killed by Armenian gangs for refusing the orders to kill Muslim women and children. His wife and children escaped with the help of his friends but only one of his children survived and was adopted by my mother's great grandfather's family after travelling hundreds of kilometers with escaping Armenian families. She was deaf because of a grenade that exploded near her.
The grandfather of my grandmother was a Muslim scholar who was burned alive by the Kurdish clergyman Seyh Said who was against Atatürk's reforms and wanted Sharia and an Islamic revolution. Seyh Said was a British agent like Lawrence and a British and Russian war hero and was executed. Unfortunately his offspring still live and hold power in government thanks to Erdogan and AKP.

That's nothing, my great-grandfather fought in ww1 for 30 years, but when he returned he was younger than his children. His arms were so long he once encircled a whole army all by himself for which he was knighted by Napoleon.

One of my ancestors was a volunteer in the Illinois militia during the US civil war. Great great grandfather fought at the battle of Verdun in the German army. Great grandfather served in Norway and later Russia. Also, have a distant cousin that served in the pacific as a pilot or gunner.

These men didn't do much talking about the wars (reasonably so) and therefore not too much information is known to me. I still have the original enlistment paper from the civil war though and a picture of my great grandfather at the Arctic circle with his unit. Also, from what I was told, they all 'lived' through the conflicts and made it home.

Battle of Salut, claimed to have taken place, between the Azd clan lead by Malik Bin Fahm Al Azdi and
the Parthians. He was also joined with allies from the clan of Quda'a, during the Azd migration to Oman

My grandpa was transferred from Germany to Russia to work in mining. It was a risky job, because one day the earth collapsed over him. Fortunately he could be rescued in time, but it's terrible to imagine these working conditions :/
