Greetings fellow tavern patrons! I come to you today to offer an interest check for a Low Fantasy Play-by-post RP.

The basics:
  • A low fantasy play-by-post role-playing game set in a world very similar to our own with technological developments comparable to 14th Century Europe
  • Monsters and magic actually exist with some rather significant differences from classic high fantasy stories
  • Magic is quite limited in scope and power, which means that while people may be aware that magic exists, few people beyond skilled specialists are capable of performing even the most minor acts of magic or even really understand how magic works
  • Monsters are rare and presented in a more "realistic" light (by this I mean that monsters will be more like beasts than humans and will probably have some basis in reality)
  • Party based, focused on a group of characters of mixed profession and origins who are part of a minor mercenary company

The goal of this play-by-post is to follow this company of mercenaries through their adventures in a setting based on the political/religious/technological landscape of the early 14th century. The alternative historical setting let's the RP use history as base without being bound by it or requiring a needless amount of focus on what actually occurred.

I am working on a proper OOC with all the good stuff like rules, a map, character guidelines, setting information and other useful things that I will post as soon tm as I feel I have reached an adequate stage in my planning.

At this point in time, I am largely interested in seeing if this particular idea might appeal some of the denizens of this ancient and illustrious subforum, but feel free to post if you have any particular concerns that might leave you in doubt.

Legless ain't got the time to play games with all these unfinished games to catch up on.  And sometimes its more fun to replay the good games....

I haven't been active here before, but that seems very interesting. I'd be up for trying.

No dice?

No dice, I am a fan of the "diceless" form of play by post RP which rely on cooperation between players and the GM(s) to decide events.

However with that being said in order to maintain some level of balance and prevent anyone from going overboard as GM I may if necessary decide successes and failures regarding combat and actions (i.e. if someone writes a godawful scene where their character kills 25 men with his/her barehands I will most definitely suggest a rewrite). In such cases, when it appears necessary, I might roll a dice to decide outcomes or simply consider what makes the most sense.

If it makes more sense, you can think of diceless play-by-post RPs as a sort of mix between collaborative writing and role-playing.

TL;DR: No dice, unless there is a problem with people writing balanced posts (or as a friend once described it "play nice and you get to keep your toys")

I haven't been active here before, but that seems very interesting. I'd be up for trying.

Great.  :P

I'm in!

Can I a play a female character if she's a lay-healer/shaman/priestess type? We can work out the specifics later when you reveal more of the world.

Jhessail is far from friendly. :P She's extremely intelligent, amicable, and witty, but friendly's the last word I'd use to describe her.

Yeah, that's definitely a possible character.  :P

While, I would definitely say that like our own world female soldiers/adventures during the setting of the RP would be less common than their male counterparts, I also have no issues seeing female characters fulfill any number of roles (i.e. a female character doesn't have to be a farmer's wife just to be "realistic" and I wouldn't have any issues with someone writing a female soldier).

The only real limitations I foresee at the moment is that depending on how I end up writing the religion(s) (as I am trying to capture some of the feel of the religious climate of the 14th century) there might be some gender or origin restrictions on characters affiliated with organized religion or institutions.

Essentially, as GM I find that there are enough examples of women doing various things in our own history that I see no need to restrict the vast majority of career paths to sex in this RP, although of course the setting is comparable to 14th century Europe, so don't necessarily expect NPCs in the setting to be as "enlightened" or accepting of difference.

I'm pretty flexible, but I'd say something like ten people would probably be the maximum.

I'm interested if you're not starting too soon.  I'll be gone to Côte d'Azur and Liguria  for about three weeks starting on Wednesday evening romeo time.  I should be back on here on the 27th or 28th of July.

Interesting, some new faces, well at least in regards to RPing in this lovely tavern.  :P

I'm not quite set on a start date yet as there will be a little bit longer of a prep time due to the nature of the setting but worst case it wouldn't be hard to find way to introduce a character later in the story.
