And in Gondor, they turned the Regent, who was really cool to everyone in the books, into a powerhungry egotisitical *******.
Denethor?  He was never cool to anyone in the books.  He was one of the characters they changed around the least. :???:
And instead of letting them go with lots of stuff, the guy Frodo and Sam run into decides to do exactly the oppsite of what he did in the book, and take them in.
This I completely understand, as much as I didn't like to see Faramir's character impugned.  After all, its kind of hard to feel that the Ring has any power when a man can so casually refuse it, especially when the movie can't spend as much time detailing the Ring's mental effects on Frodo.  What I didn't like about the resulting scene was how a Nazgul flies away from the Ring when it gets shot with one arrow.  THAT was lame.

I don't remember Denethor being a crazed prick who frothed at the mouth every five minutes, the way he is portrayed in the movie.
I do remember his entire death speech being practically the same.  Likewise, his reaction to Aragorn's coming was very similar as well.  I'm not sure how you could consider Denethor sane at all, based on the books.

I think you need to crack open the books again. Denethor is perfectly rational until he sees the black ships in the palantír and Faramir seems to be dying. In the movie, he refuses to send for the aid of Rohan and the mission he gives Faramir is utter suicide. In the books, he sends the Red Arrow to Theoden and the mission to defend the Anduin may not have been the wisest choice but it wasn't irrational. In addition, what little interaction with Pippin he has in the movie is decidedly different from what is contained in the books.

Check the Appendix of RotK.

"Denethor II was a proud man, tall, valiant, and more kingly than any man that had appeared in Gondor for many lives of men; and he was wise also, and far-sighted, and learned in lore."

Also, in the books, he said to Boromir that the regents would never become king, and made a big speech about the honor of Gonder, and in the movie, he set himself up as king.

Initially, yes.  He makes several statements to the contrary as well, admittedly after he starts breaking down.

In the movie, he refuses to send for the aid of Rohan and the mission he gives Faramir is utter suicide.[/quote]I forgot about the aid from Rohan, but he does push Faramir needlessly hard in the books as well.

this is still a thread about martial arts in movies, not about the differences you hate in the LOTR movies. So please, stay on topic.

Do we have any Swedes on this forum?

If we do, what can they tell us about this Film/TV series:
