The guides in this section are not extensive, they are simply a starting point for anyone interested in contributing. If you think there is something missing or incorrect point it out so we can make adjustments. Feel free to offer suggestions for any guides you think should be added, if you want to write a guide to be included in this section > even better.

Note: This guide is for principles of livestreaming, see the guides for Xsplit for information regarding the software used.

Livestreaming is the process of broadcasting your screen/game view for others to watch. Livestreaming whilst playing is NOT reccomended as livestreaming is:
  • CPU intensive (fps lag)
  • Bandwidth intensive (actual lag)

Regardless of how powerful your computer is, Livestreaming is likely to have an adverse affect on your game performance. It is far better to livestream as a spectator.
When livestreaming as a spectator you should have the ENL admin mod installed, and join the server with the admin password. This will allow you to give yourself streamer status without disrupting the match.

To livestream you will need the following:
  • Screen capture software (Xsplit)
  • Streaming service (twitch)
  • A good internet connection with high upload speeds. (be wary of your ISP's policy on transfer limits, livestreaming involves uploading lots of data: several GBs)

When livestreaming
You should:
  • Get permission to livestream the match from BOTH teams
  • Consider commentating (see commentary section for guidlines)
  • Mute other application sounds (We only want to hear the game sound and commentary)
  • Avoid following players "over the shoulder view".
  • Show the main action when it occurs
  • Be conservative with camera movement (lower your mouse sensitivity, avoid zooming too close to the action)
  • Only show the match or things relevant to the match. (We don't tune in to watch you chatting to your friends)
  • Consider preparing screens showing table positions or other related info to the match.
  • Arrive to the match early, and start streaming well in advance.
  • Provide a link as early as possible
Commentary is where a commentator will talk/discuss the match in the video/livestream. Commentary can be added live or afterwards. Most of the info here is applicable to both.

When commentating
You should:
  • Speak clearly
  • Check your microphone volume beforehand
  • Avoid bad language (swearing, insults)
  • Use player names as often as possible
  • Consider having a co-commentator
  • Avoid more than 3 commentators (it will be very hectic)

When co-commentating
You should:
  • Be aware that your view is not the same as what is being streamed
  • Give priority to what the streamer has to say (they can see what is being streamed after all)

Topics to discuss
It can sometimes be difficult knowing what to comment on when commentating, here are some topics you may wish to consider talking about.
  • Maps and factions > strengths and weaknesses
  • Team Strategy/Tactics > Is team A attacking? Is team B trying to hold a region of the map?
  • Class distribution > Did you just say they had 9 archers!?
  • Clan Strengths/Weaknesses > Is one of the clans notoriously bad at baking?
  • Key Players > Who should we be looking out for?

Most importantly
  • Keep it interesting
Point of view recordings give us a great view of the battle, they are typically recorded with FRAPS (see the section of FRAPS for more info).

Given the nature of POV recordings you Do NOT need permission in order to take a POV recording.
If you take a POV recording simply upload (after any editing you wish to do) it and provide a link. No assignments will be made for POV recordings it will be left to each players own discretion and prerogative.

Things to consider
  • Recording your game may negatively affect your game performance
  • Recordings typically record all sound output from your computer, consider muting any unwanted sounds (e.g. Music, Teamspeak, Steam chat notifications)
  • If you are on teamspeak (you really should be if you're playing a match), warn your clan you are recording and may pick up their voice.
  • Try not to use bad language, and try to warn your clan to do the same (swearing, insults)
ENL does not include any rules to allow for streamers or recordings, there is a lot of support for it but we need to be aware of our position. We need permission from both teams to broadcast/stream/record a match from spectator(with free spec cam). Note: POV recordings do not require permission.

It is best if you obtain permission from both teams before the match, you can find contact details for all teams in the contacts thread.
If you chose to contact the teams via pm you may wish to use the following template (submitted by Maynd)

Permission request template said:
Match: team vs team
Date: eg: 18/12/2011
Server: This is important, some servers barely allow specs, for instance France_1 will allow to have 3 commentators, while German servers will only allow 2 commentators.
Type of Broadcast: Live Stream with commentators, live stream without commentators, recording for highlights, etc
Requested by: either by a personal member, or by a team.

Do your team agree and allow this match to be live streamed or recorded? pretty obvious, both teams need to agree, otherwise its a no go.

Code:
[b]Match:[/b]
[b]Date:[/b]
[b]Server:[/b]
[b]Type of Broadcast:[/b]
[b]Requested by:[/b]
[b]Do your team agree and allow this match to be live streamed or recorded?[/b]

If it transpires that you do not have time to contact the teams before the match is scheduled, it is acceptable to ask both teams in the server before the match has started.

IMPORTANT
If you do not obtain permission from BOTH teams, you cannot stream/record their match. Please respect their decision.

well done!!

but what about IG vs REF video???  :???:

I've heard progress has been made and commentary may be added tonight.

It's quite a confusing thing to commentate on (and film), I've found. With sports, you generally have a focus (typically a ball of some description) but here you have an awful lot going on all over the place. We have the advantage of being able to compile the footage and watch it through so we know what's coming but beyond that, you're still forced to make fairly general and sometimes quite abstract comments .

Thanks for the nice feedback anyway and I hope the commentary adds something. Sorry this took so long to get made.

Crazyboy certainly has a sexier voice.

You can also try commentating on the maps and factions and the advantages it gives according to the team playstyles. For instance, I consider these maps to be maps that favor teams like IG and RRush. Good cav, good archer teams. Certainly doesn't favor REF, which I consider a closed map team with lots of infantry charges.

Anyways, thanks for uploading these. Looks great!
