History of glass?

Users who are viewing this thread

Hi, I've wondering for a while about who invented glass? Why it became so widely used ? Who started innovating the techniques to make better glass?

Is there any history buff here who knows things about glass?

I have no idea where glass originated, but I am aware that before glass was widely available the mineral mica was oftentimes used as "windows" and such -- paper rubbed with oil could also be used, and mirrors were often bronze or some other metal that had been highly polished.

No one knows exactly when or where glass was first made. Glass appears to have been produced as far back as the second millennium BC by the Egyptians & perhaps the Phoenicians. Yet evidently it originated in Mesopotamia, where pieces of well made glass have been found, believed to date from the third millennium BC.
