Yeah, I love this book and I'm going to make a mod about it so...
but I'm asking for the helmets not the unicorn.
 
I shall be modeling something more simple. I want to create a varied pack. Some kettle helmets. I know there are many, but remember, this is also practice for me. Can't get better without doing work to get to where you want :smile:

That's a broad category, considering cataphracts have existed since the 3rd Century B.C
 
Alrighty, got the helmet done. What shader should I use for the plume? AS it has alpha. I have the helmet as multi mesh. So the plume is seperate. What shader should I use? Oh and which settings?

Awesome. Plumes should be closer imo.
 
from some points of view plume looks pretty good
but if you want get better result try to find combination not in single planes but in combined for example " /\" "X"
also try to use few uvmapped version of plume it can be same color or a bit different
when you painting plumes you must know what exactly it is is it some kind of feathers is it horse hairs ...

when you using alpha channels leave background black or the same color as your plume is

in overall like for first try it looks good :smile:

Note how helmet chain looks so different from hauberk chain, while they should be mostly alike. Also, there is too much tiling visible on the former.
 
While making plumes i always use triangular cylinders, i mean a cylinder with three sides instead of planes, so it wont look too wierd when viewed from certain directions. This way it also gives the impression of density and also saves vertices than three separate planes, i mix it up with "X" crossed planes as well to get variety.

Hmm which method is prefered? I always started with transparency when making anything with alpha channels but i have seen most native textures use the same color as the texture for background but i never undertstood why that was.
