Afaik, teutonic orders started to use rectangular shields (or pavise) to better defend themselves from missile armies, both smaller type for cavalry and bigger for infantry. I may be wrong, I cannot nemember where did I read this, if it was an osprey book, Eric Christiansen or William Urban.

Last but not least, teutonic banners. They were captured after the battle and copied into a codex, Banderia Prutenorum, by Dlugosz, that is luckily known.
I guess you knew this already, but anyway, here they are!

The banners are lovely. It's great to see proper period heraldry in these things. The only thing I'd caution against is that some of them have lost their feel of texture/cloth, and/or are done in bright enough colours that they'll display as practically being neon in M&B. It won't be so bad during map travel, but when it shows up on armour, shields, or the banners in lord's halls, they'll be crazy bright.
