Poor horse AI in tournament arenas

I've noticed that npcs on horses tend to have bad AI in the tournament arenas. They usually ride around but ride into the arena walls and usually just get stuck/sit there instead of turning away and riding off again. Has anyone else had this?

It's actually pretty common, when then do that it's your opportunity to couch your lance and smash them.
