Music of the times.

It felt kinda dead in here so I though I'd make a new thread.

I don't know about any of you, but if theres something I love it's early Baroque, it's simply fantastic, and seeing how this game takes place during that time I thought I would share some with you - though it's mostly German and Swedish Baroque (The Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus was kind of a hero at the time and had many great pieces written for him). Anyway, there's also some battlefield music as well, such as Cavalry trumpets and infantry music too. It's simply great, but yeah. All of these were written during the time span of the Thirty years war (1630s or earlier) which mean it was also in the latter part of the Eighty Years War. Enjoy:

Hendrich Lübeckh - Auffzug printipal No.4
This is actually battlefield music - well inspired by. Think about that, they ripped each other apart to music like this. Just brilliant.

Erasmus Widmann - Aller Freyen Tromettern zu Ehren
Here we got some cavalry trumpets.

Adolphus Terserus - Quadricinium triumphale
Music to celebrate the success of the Swedish army in the Thirty Years War in 1632 (The same year the king would later die)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHn7ZzjWgCQ

Jacob Praetorius - Salve decus suecorum Rex Gustave Adolphe
A piece to celebrate the Swedish king, first preformed in 1623
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csX1IIyxKe0

Johann Staden - Plausus Noricus
One of my favourite pieces. It was composed in Nuremberg when the Swedish army had marched in, it plays on the general feeling of the end of the earth and the Swedes are there to liberate them from the eagle (The Lion from the North), just beautiful.

Now I know this is mainly pieces to celebrate the Swedish king and the Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years War but that's mostly cause it's what I'm listening to, and secondly it does very well 'show' how music during that period sounded like - It's all in Latin and German. If you got some pieces yourselves that you like to post, feel free to do so.

or you could use these songs, they're public domain, aren't they?

That's actually more or less true, they were recorded by a Swedish musical school I believe, they do not claim any of it really. He could very well use them all.

Dutch Warsong
Merck toch hoe sterck - Bergen op Zoom
Anno: 1622

You know the Dutch used bagpipes as army standard instrument even before the Scottish?
Maybe they could add a unit with bagpipes, like the drummer and flautist from the Mount & Musket mod.

"Zonder Vreesch Ende Blaem"

I can remember something about bagpipes being used in the Lowlands. Of course there were English and Scottish mercenaries there.

Seems like a good idea. I think we can try this one out.

The bagpipe was a Dutch standard music instrument during that era,it was not
brought by the Scottish or the English because the Dutch used bagpipe long before
Britain. I thought a warlord brought the instrument to the Lowlands during a campaign.

Wow,thanks Nypifisel, you totally brought me in a 16th century mood

De Staaten van Hollant - ?
I know this tune for over a few years, which I know is that
this music was often played during the 80 Year War to celebrate
victory. This tune was played by the United Provinces

How about the Wilhelmus? Since it describes the war from a Dutch point of view.

The whole problem is, it was very different then than it is now. And if I am not mistaking, the lyrics also changed over time. But if you find something of the ol' Dutch anthem, we can include it I think.

Old anthem (1st couplet):

Wilhelmus van Nassouwe
Ben ick van Duytschen bloet,
Den Vaderlant getrouwe
Blyf ick tot in den doot:
Een Prince van Oraengien
Ben ick vrij onverveert,
Den Coninck van Hispaengien
Heb ick altijt gheeert

New Anthem (1st couplet):

Wilhelmus van Nassouwe
ben ik, van Duitsen bloed,
den vaderland getrouwe
blijf ik tot in den dood.
Een Prinse van Oranje
ben ik, vrij onverveerd,
den Koning van Hispanje
heb ik altijd geëerd.

See the difference between the ages?
It shall be hard to find the older version.

Next you'll want the whole mod done in ancient Diets or something..
The words are exactly the same. If above versions are correct, the lyrics did not change over time.

You gotta seperate the older written language with the spoken one, seeing how none of us lived back then you can't really know for sure but the spoken language sounded quite much alike their modern equivalents. That's the thing about pre-standardized language, back then you pretty much wrote it as it sounded (Shakespare for instance once spelled his own name differently 5 times on the same written page )

Though I don't speak Dutch, Swedish sure did look alot nicer and more poetic in those days.

Well the words are the same, the may have been written differently since there was no spell check as we have here. Also the interpretation of the words may have changed but the song still is about the Prince and the revolt.

The Dutch anthem is also the oldest anthem of the world
