That's kind of how I feel about it too, but aren't Paradox games generally supposed to be easily "de-coupled" from Steam? I know all I had to do to get a non-Steam version of EU3 was to copy the folder to a different directory (which I did because Steam/Paradox took like 2 months or something to get a Steam version of the patch released).

Oh and Amazon often matches Steam sales too, so might be worth keeping an eye on their game downloads if you're looking for a non-Steam version.

CKII only has two versions, the one from GamersGate and Steam for every other place that sells it. I ended up just buying it on Steam although I still wish I had boguht it on GG.

I don't give a shit about MP though.
