Equipment Cap
« on: September 12, 2009, 08:34:39 PM »
So I finally got around the AVG problem by getting a new antivirus and I started to play some MP matches. I'll be the first to admit that I'm absolutely horrible at mp, but here is an opinion of mine that might help balance out the game. It's called "Equipment Cap". Adding a cap to the amount of the same equipment that can be wielded by the same team would balance the game better. The cap could be in relation to the amount of players currently playing. Just throwing the idea out there.

Anyone want to add to it? And please no flaming....

Should that balance things out more ?
I don't think it's unbalanced now, and would be sad if the equipment was limited.
And if all units had the same equipment - say all archers - the team in general would probably suffer from it.

Same with me, having an equipment cap would be bad since that would screw up the swadians since they are supposed to be heavily armored
Triple post, damn, I need to be banned.

maybe not a cap, but have it a number next to the soldier (i.e. nord veteran (11)) meaning there are 11 nord veterans on your team and alive. this tends to spread things nicely. if you've played bf1942 online, that's what i'm talking about. well i suppose even if you haven't... that's still what i'm talking about lol...

I care to disagree lol. I'm terrible. All i can do is knock people off their horses. Once that happens I'm a gonner lol.

Well guys, perhaps with a larger selection of weapons and armors a restriction on the number of "elite" weaponry and armor could balance out the game. I guess thus far it wouldn't help much. Perhaps more choices of armors and weapons would be nice.

you mean kinda like LotR: Conquest?

but I thought you could choose your weapons and stuff; what would be the point if you have full choices?

Are you referring to an equipment cap or a troop type cap?

if there are all archers on your team, you'll probably pick another class. probably one w/o bows. hence- bow cap. it doesn't directly translate to a cap, but if you want to be successful, you can't have all archers. (etc)

got a post in there before i could put one up haha. @ctrlaltde1337... i don't propose a real cap at all. people will naturally spread out to all the classes if they can see there are 24 veterans and 1 xxxx. since only certain classes get certain weapons (and weapon SKILL, more importantly), you have a quasi weapon & equip cap all in one.

I agree with the general idea of this type of balance. But I don't think a cap is needed. Its part of the strategic immersion of teams to chose their classes appropriately. I think is falls in the team coop and strategy category.

I never proposed a troop type cap. What i propose is that we have an equipment cap based on the number of players currently playing. Maybe it could be just on the "Elite" weapons and armors so that they could not all be spammed. This would give the losing team which has less money a better chance at winning as well.

so....like you can only have X amount of siege crossbows, Y amount of Khergit bows, Z amount of Bastard swords (the ones that are 1H OR 2H) on each team? might work. But I don't think that a Khergit player or Rhodok guy would be too happy about that....Khergit Bows and Bodkin arrows FTW!

Doing this could create an unbalance for less skilled players (or at least ones who do not take in Denars as fast). What ultimately happens, is that only the best players on the team get to use the best equipment, causing lesser players to be at a large disadvantage and therefore not enjoy the game as much. This idea also may introduce an accelerated focus on "Gold Farming", where players will try to accumulate as much money as possible to get the weapon before anyone else; Though most means of getting money are helpful to the whole team, there is almost always a non-constructive means of doing so that is faster than being helpful. (for example, killing riderless horses gives money, but not very helpful (but a poor example because it is not a great income substitute))

However, as a skilled player, I do agree that this idea of equipment capping would benefit me, and real armies are not fully comprised of generals, but with only a small number of people at the top with the best equipment to lead their allies.

I have listed what I see as pros and cons to this idea, and I now offer an alternative:
add a set of "Lordly" equipment that costs a overwhelming amount of money, so that eventually from the bloodied masses, one great warrior will rise, clad in shining armor to lead their fellow soldiers.
(this idea can also be limited to only one person having access to this equipment. However, to ensure that a poor player who does not know what they are doing gets it, perhaps instead of high cost, have only the person who is first to (lets say) 12 kills gains access to the equipment, and then cannot fall more then 2 kills behind anyone on the team, or else that said person will then gain "the crown")
It is embarrassing when I get my friends all excited about Warband, then they find out I don't have the closed beta.

Please let me in the closed beta!

theres an idea.

but probably make it multi-tiered? like in a game of 20 people, there are 3 knightly armors per team, with just requirements (say, first people to get an 8 kill streak), 2 lordly armors(1 on each team, with requirements being 12 kills and the highest or 2nd highest on the team), and 1 kingly armor, which would be given to the best player, though he must have no less than 15 kills and a 1.5:1 kill-to-death ratio.

so if you have 18 kills, but more than 12 deaths, you cannot have it. and it would be the only thing to change hands between teams during a game (lord armor changes in teams, but not between each team)
