DDS into BRF?
« on: July 27, 2012, 10:54:01 AM »
Sorry. I'm just a noob and have this little question:
How to put DDS files into a BRF file?

And one more please: how to convert from .wings to .dds?

Go to Import -> Import New Texture

Also make sure the texture is located in the modules texture folder.

wings. format is the softwares own model format, meaning that it's different than the texture format, which in this case, .dds is.

You create a texture for the model, and then convert it to a dds format.

Well that exports the model as a obj which is required for the obj to read the model. But the texture is different. Watch the tuts, it shows how to make the textures.

Probably you already have these but it doesn't hurt to repeat them:

DDS Viewer - can (obviously) view the DDS files and also save them as other image types (jpg, png, tiff etc)
http://ddsviewer.com/

DDS Converter 2 - can convert different types of image files to DDS. it's a bit tricky as you need to re-select the file you want converted a few times until the program actually will run with it.
http://eliteforce2.filefront.com/file/DDS_Converter;29412

openBRF - import 3Ds and assign textures. be sure to import both texture and material (just to make sure) and then write the name of the dds file you imported in the material tab (on top of the data segment). also if you have a bumb map, be sure to import that you also and type it in the material section under the bump tab. in case the changes do not take place immediately save, close and open again. also don't forget to set the module you work on (your mod folder) and set the module.ini to load your models.

I hope that helps.

You might try this,it's name may sound strange,but it's not a virus:http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/download/dxtbmpx.EXE
Install it,and use it to open/view .dds texture files,it uses MS Paint,or Photoshop,to edit textures.
It is my default program for viewing, and therefore editing,.dds files, and though I haven't done much texture work in months,I put it to good use a while back doing texture modding on Stronghold 2.

And don't confuse files with references!

You don't save textures within BRF files, only its names, its references, like a link.
These are stored separately, in the \Textures directory of your module of choice.

OpenBRF and the game know how to find and open them, because they do the lookup.
Just don't mistake them and grasp the concepts. :)

Oh, and here you have a handy DDS thumbnailer so Windows Explorer lets you preview them, that may help a lot:
