Welcome to the HardGamerz European Native Summer Cup 2012, in association with the European Native League. This is a knockout competition that will last approximately 2 weeks with games being played at a relatively high rate compared to previous tournaments and competitions. Whilst this tournament is intended to test a new format and ruleset for matches, it will be run to a serious competitive standard.

The new match ruleset will be map (rather than round) based. Each match will have a selection of 3 generated map and faction setups to choose from, with maps being closed, mixed and open. One team will pick the first setup to play, which is played as normal over 6 rounds (spawn and faction switch) and then the other team will pick the second setup. A point will be awarded when a team wins a map (i.e. gets 4 points, 3 points and 1 draw, 2 points and 3 draws or 1 point and 5 draws - once any of those scores are reached, the map ends). If there is a winner after 2 maps, that team will take the game and proceed. If not, the third setup will be played and the winner of that map will take the match. If the scores are even after 6 rounds in the third map, a tiebreaker will be played. More details are given in the Match Format rules below.

The tournament will pretty much run a standard single elimination format, with the added twist that once the finals are reached, the teams knocked out by the finalists will start to play each other in a series of playoff matches progressing through the bracket starting with the teams knocked out first. Once the final is played, the winner of these playoffs that came from the champion's defeated teams will face the loser of the final for second place. The playoff matches will be played at a punishingly high rate that is completely inflexible, to ensure that the second place playoff can be played shortly after the final. Another key feature of the tournament format is the scheduling. Each round of matches will be allocated 3 days. By midnight before the first day, teams will be expected to have picked their match date. This will be done by having one team pick two of the days and the other team picking their preferred day from those two. This simple system leaves no room of unfairness or delay and any team that fails to make their selections on time will be subject entirely to the decision of the other team about when the match should be played. Timeslot scheduling will also have a more fixed system, where teams can choose one of 3 options before the start of the tournament that they must stick to. More details about that are below.

The number of teams will depend on signups. A qualifying round will take place consisting of the last teams to signup in order to bring the numbers down to a power of 2.

Timeslots and dealing with them.

Upon signing up for the competition teams will have 3 different options: Early, Late or Flexible.

(All times in BST)

  • Teams that choose "Early" will only ever be expected to play at 17:00 or 18:30.
  • Teams that choose "Late" will only ever be expected to play at 18:30 or 20:00.
  • Teams that choose "Flexible" may be expected to play at any timeslot but will always get to choose if they are up against an "Early" or "Late" team.

If an "Early" team meets a "Late" team, they will always play at 18:30. If an "Early" or "Late" team meets a team with the same timeslot preference then one team will be randomly picked to choose the timeslot. If a "Flexible" team meets a "Flexible" team, one team will be randomly selected to pick two timeslots and the other will make the final selection from those two.

I think this system is fair for everyone and it prevents two slots being taken up. However, I'm thinking of changing the timeslots to 17:00, 18:30 and 20:00 since that seems like it might offer a fairer balance. Thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Quote from: Match Rules
  • Combat Speed: Medium, Friendly Fire: 100% (melee and ranged), Round Duration: 300 seconds, Game type: Battle, Gold: All set to 100%, Respawn Time : 8 sec , Spectator Settings: Locked to team members view. No bots and no polls.
  • Matches will be played on pre generated map and faction setups. 3 different setups will be available for each match. Team 1 will pick the first map, with team 2 picking the side they want to play first. The second map will be picked by team 2, with team 1 picking the side to play first.
  • Maps will be played over 6 rounds, with teams swapping spawns and factions after 3 rounds. Once a team has scored more rounds than it's possible for their opponent to score, the map is over and that team has won. A map can also be drawn if all 6 rounds are played and the teams are even on rounds won.
  • If a team is leading after 2 maps, they win the match. If the teams are even after 2 maps, the third, unpicked map and faction setup will be played. Team 2 chooses the starting spawns for the third map.
  • If the third map ends in a draw, it will be replayed as a 2 round map with teams swapping sides after 1 round. If this still doesn't provide a winner, it will be played again. If the teams tie once more, the match will go to sudden death. The order of the sides that teams play on will be the same as those used for the third map.
    • Teams may make as many substitutions as they want between each of these 2 round maps, however they may not substitute anyone during them and will be expected to make the substitutions at the map reset
  • If 2 of the 2 round tiebreakers are played and still no team has won then team 1 will pick a map to be played for sudden death. This can be any of the maps listed below as tournament maps. Team 2 will then pick their preferred spawn and faction, after which team 1 will pick their faction. Team 1 is allowed to pick the same faction as team 2. Once this is done, the map will be started and played until a team has won a round. The winner of that round is the winner of the match.
  • Rounds resulting in a draw will count as normal, with no points awarded to either team.
  • Matches will be 8 a side, with no class or equipment restrictions.
  • All matches must be played on the official tournament servers named: "ENL_France" (servers 1-2), "ENL_Germany" (servers 1-3) and "ENL_Hungary" (server 1). Book timeslots on these servers, in the Server Booking thread, in this sub-forum. If wish to play your match on any other server, you must request permission from me (captain lust) via PM. The password, for these servers is "enl20" and should always be reset to "enl20" after use, so people can register players and test pings.
  • Teams may make 2 substitutions during each 3 round leg. This includes replacing players who crash or disconnect. When making a switch, the outgoing player should leave the server. At no point should teams spawn more than 8 players. If more than 8 players spawn, the round can be played out but it automatically forfeit, as long as screenshot or video evidence is provided. If more than 10 players spawn for one team in a round, the leg is forfeit to the opposing team and can be stopped immediately.
    • If "no spectators" has been agreed by the teams, the joining player should respect that and make sure to join the server late in the round. If spectators have been agreed and allowed by both teams then neither team should take up more than half of the spectator spots.
  • Teams are permitted to make as many changes as they like after each 3 round leg, after each 2 round tiebreaker and before sudden death.
  • At every sideswap and between each tiebreaker, the map should be resetted immediately by either team and will go live straight away, with know acknowledgement required by either team. Teams will be expected to make any substitutions at that time and are not entitled to any break. After each of the first 3 maps and before sudden death, teams are entitled to a five minute break determined by the in game timer. For this reason, teams should let 5 minute timer of the next round run to 0:00, at which point the map should change and go live straight away. If this doesn't happen, the team that gets the last kill/teamkill/suicide that prevents it or changes the map prematurely (a few seconds early is not prematurely) will be subject to the other team's map restart which they can make without giving notice. However, this does not give them the right to timewaste and an event admin should be called upon if this becomes an issue.
  • Typically, matches will be played without a referee. There are simply too many matches to expect a referee to be present most of the time, so take frequent screenshots and even video recordings, if you can.
  • Special versions of the Warband maps will be made for the tournament. They will fix map bugs and remove ways to glitch, removing the problem of glitches entirely. A log of the changes made to the maps will be kept and the maps will be made publicly available.
  • If a team cannot show out with 8 players, for a match, the other team should continue with 8 anyway. If however, a team cannot make 7 players or more, the other team will be offered a default win, provided they have shown up with at least 8 players. If neither team has shown up with 8 players, the match should be rescheduled. Teams should allow 15 minutes, after the scheduled match time, for players to arrive on the server, before any of these rulings are put into practice.
  • The above notions of shown players are defined by attendance on the agreed server alone. Players must be eligible, ready and willing to start the match.
Quote from: Tournament Rules and Format
  • The tournament will use a single elimination format with an addition playoff stage to determine 2nd place.
  • The playoff stage will commence once the semi finals have been resolved and will involve the teams that lost to the finalists. The teams that lost to each finalist will playoff separately, starting with the first two and progressing through the rounds. These matches will take place on consecutive days with no room for flexibility.
  • After the final has taken place, all the teams that lost to the loser of the final in the knockout stages will be automatically disqualified and the winner of the playoffs from the champion's side will face of against the loser of the final. This match will use the standard 3-day scheduling system
  • For each match, the teams will be randomly assigned as team 1 and team 2. This will have significance for a number of issues.
  • Upon signing up, all teams will choose their timeslot preference as either "Early", "Late" or "Flexible".
  • All knockout matches (this excludes the 2nd place playoffs) will use the standard 3-day system: In this system, team 1 will pick 2 out of 3 available dates for the match, after which team 2 will pick from those 2 dates, to decide the final match date as well as the timeslot for their match if the teams are both "Early" or both "Late. If the teams are both "Flexible", team 2 will pick their 2 preferred timeslots and team 1 must then pick from those two. If team 2 is "Flexible" and the other is either "Early" or "Late" then team 2 should select the timeslot along with their date selection. If team 1 is "Flexible" and the other is either "Early" or "Late" then team 1 may either pick the timeslot along with their date selection or wait for team 2 to pick the final date. Failure to make any of your team's date or timeslot picking deadlines will mean handing the decision over to your opponent. If one team is "Early" and the other "Late", then the middle timeslot of 18:30 BST will be used.
  • Teams will be randomly placed within the bracket.
  • Open, mixed and closed maps will be individually cycled for the tournament.
  • Factions will be randomised with a cap of 30% appearance frequency for each faction.
  • The event admins will have the final say. If a dispute does not fall in your favour or you are unhappy with a decision, you must accept it.
  • Any suspected breach of the Team Regulations, Tournament or Match Rules should be met with immediate confrontation and should be reported to an event admin, as soon as possible, preferably by your team captain. Any team that keeps quiet about friendly fire being set to the wrong percentage (for example), and then complains after they lose, will have their protests ignored.
  • Threads will be made for groups of matches based on the bracket. This is likely to vary depending on the size of the tournament.
  • A qualifying round will take place between the latest signups in order to reduce the number of teams to a power of 2. Teams that lose in the qualifying round will not be eligible to participate in the second place playoffs.
  • All matches will be eligible for livestreaming. This is not up to the teams involved and teams should not expect to be asked or given any prior notice. If a team specifically does not want a match streamed, they should contact an event admin about it but there is no guarantee this will change things.
Quote from: Team Regulations
  • Teams are expected to sign up with one captain. This captain will be fully responsible for all decisions the team makes, including leaving the competition, scheduling matches, updating the roster and receiving prize money.
  • Rosters will be kept for all teams. There will be no upper limit, for these rosters but players may only use players from their roster for matches. These rosters will be publicly displayed, along with corresponding gameIDs for players. These can be verified by teams, using the ENL Admin Mod on official servers.
  • Players may not be in two team rosters, in the tournament, at the same time. As such, IDs may not be shared between players. This also applies to the 120000 clause, meaning that one player may not have an ID 120000 apart from another player, if both IDs are within the ranges of 330000-379999 and 450000-499999.
  • If a player has been on the roster, for one team, at any point during the tournament, they may not join any other team during the tournament.
  • Teams found to have been using anyone with a game ID that is not on their roster, will forfeit all the rounds in which that player (or those players) played.
    • Due to a marked trend in the IDs of Russian players, this rule will not apply where the mismatched ID of a Russian player is exactly 120000 higher or lower than the ID listed in the roster within the ranges of 330000-379999 or 450000-499999, unless the mismatched ID of the player is present on another team's roster. In the case that this clause is used, the mismatched ID will be automatically assigned to that player as a result.
  • Any registered player found to be registered to two teams or playing for a team they are not registered for will be banned from the competition.
  • Additions to team rosters will go through at midnight on each deadline day.
  • Players may not be removed from rosters once the tournament has begun.
  • All player additions should be made in the appropriate thread [not made yet]. The thread will contain clear instructions, on how changes should be made and when they will be valid.
  • Teams should all wear their team tags in matches, with no exceptions.

Where's that?

Yeah it's extra thanks to HardGamerz.com for providing the France servers. I also want to test out some sponsorship ideas for the tournament so that's a bit of a bonus.

Fixed, thanks. I'd be grateful for any feedback, particularly on the new match rules where there are most changes. It'd be particularly useful if a team could try out the new ruleset in scrim or something at let me know how it went.

I assume every division (you only mention divisions in one rule: "Additions to team rosters will be allowed on one a set day, each week (this day will be different, for each division). Additions will be unlimited, on these days.") gets it's own knock-out tree?

Nope the seed will be random. That was just some copypasta failing.

So no divisions for this, will they likely be back in next ENL?

Yeah the ENL will continue as normal. This can be thought of as an entirely separate competition. Teams entered don't need to match ENL teams in any way and infact will be handled separately. Neither competition has any effect on the other.

Unseeded single elimination is kind of mental when you have a perfectly valid ranking of teams to use for seeding. As well as making the results of this tournament less accurate for all teams below the final it implies enl isn't legitimately or effectively ranking the teams and idk why you'd want to do either of those things :/

It's unseeded to avoid dissuading new teams from forming for the competition. I think the 2nd place playoff system makes up enough for the issues with randomised seeding. Additionally, I've already stated that I think the ENL has a number of problems and that I want to shift emphasis away from it as the pinnacle of clan/team achievement in Warband. This tournament can be fairly seen as part of that effort.

How much are we talking about?
And is prize money really a good idea?
The solution to beating good teams is to get better, not try to split them up

I think it improves the format, whether money comes into play or not. In straight single elimination, it's no fun if all the best teams meet each other really low down in the bracket. It's not ideal with this format but at least it potentially keeps good teams in the competition for longer. I'm thinking of changing at around a little bit to have each side of the playoffs face each other and then after the final, either have a 2nd place match or not depending on whether the winner's side won the losers' playoff. Then that'd give 1st, 2nd and a potentially questionable third if the loser of the final lost to the winner of the playoffs (which would only be played if the winner's side won the playoffs). Even then, I think it'd be a reasonably legitimate 3rd place.

As for money in this tournament, I'm not sure right now. If there is any, it won't be more than a sweetener just to try it out and make things a little more interesting.
