City state? Wercheg.

Discuss
Yes. Agree. Whole-heartedly.
Get your spotting up high and you should have a good amount of warning, plus it takes forever for folks to come from the 'mainland' to the peninsula. The only thing you need to defend from is some sea raiders to ensure your villagers make it to market and your villages should be pretty prosperous.

(Granted, I haven't played at length since 2.3, so I don't know if things have change drastically to make this less plausible...but I like it for is RP value and isolation on top of its past feasibility.)

The only problem with Wercheg is that you're going to have a harder time surviving on income from it.  It doesn't have as many towns as well, but they are much easier to defend.  Caravans just don't make it up to that section of the map that much.  Good point is that neither do hostile armies.

Could always use it as a trading port/raiding home base and actually have a use for ships as it will let you get to Tihr and Saragoth pretty quick for trade or pillaging or more Sea Raider killing, as alternative sources of income. But yeah, it isn't Dihirm ;)

I wonder if Wercheg's distance will actually make a difference, though. I mean, if the Sarranids are at war with no one but your 1 city faction, chances are they'll cross the whole of Calradia just to give you a hard time, distance be damned.

Edit: I do agree with Caba about its RP value though, especially as the den of lawlessness I described before... hmm...
I just took this funny little RPG personality test... I really don't understand how people get crap like "Vampire".

Well for role play purposes i gues it comes down to the rules. Units your using, sources of income....

For example do you survive on the finances of your 1 city alone or can you get income from investments. Honestly, with the banking system, my town can be very poor and financially i have no problem since i get money from anywhere else.

Honestly Commodore is right here. Distance does not matter. Your only real hope with location is that your enemy is at war with another kingdom that owns land between you and them. With wercheg, staying real friendly with the vaegirs means they could almost be a protective bubble for your kingdom. With good relation, anyone going to war with you would go to war with them. Resulting in wercheg rarely seeing action, since the Vaegirs would most likely catch the enemy before they get to you.

A lot of people have found, though, that the Vaegirs get wiped off the map pretty quickly by the Nords, so you may well end up finding that your allies can't defend themselves, let alone you.

In my current game Vaegirs are slaughtered almost to extinction at day 40, they have Reyvadin and 2 castles left and most of their lords have armies with max 40 soldiers.

The tactic holds sound whoever lives or dies. The idea is to friend the nation closest to you so that your enemies would have to go through them to get to you.

P.S. at day 400 in my game... Vaegirs have beat the nords down to 1 castle and are fight for the top spot as the power house of calradia. Just saying

I got for Dhirim too. If I happen to conquer Swadia (or take it from whoever has taken Dhirim from Swadia), I tend to make Dhirim my capital. I don't mind losing other cities as long as I can hold Dhirim. Aside from the good trade and how easy it is to make Dhirim and the nearby villages rich, because it's in the center it's easier to reach other places if you need to. If I gather my army there we can ride more quickly to our target. Takes less than a day to ride from Dhirim to Sargoth (whereas if you had to wait for the slower lords, riding from Jelkala or Tulga to Sargoth would take maybe 2 days).

I go for Khudan, because I just like the look of the snowy towns, and Khudan has a better castle without an annoying staircase to go up to your chest like Curaw has. It's not particularly strategically advantageous though as far as I can tell.
