In M&B militia is higher. Recruit is tier 1 and militia is tier 2.

Historically, there was no such thing as ranks.

In modern times, the two terms are not mutually exclusive.

For example, you might be a recruit in a militia, or a recruit in regular forces.
But back then, things like a militia called levies were formed.
