What really annoys me is seeing "the villagers have joined the battle on your side" when you attack a looting lord - even if he's run some distance from the village. When I'm fighting a couple of hundred Rhodok sergeants and sharpshooters, having my elite cavalry street fight while diluted by a bunch of peasants isn't helpful.
I've started to assign villagers (male and female) to a different group, named it Rabble.  That way I can either send these guys charging while I organize my troops or use them as a bit of a buffer in the face of heavy missiles.

Just take the time to reassign them when you rescue some prisoners from a party.
Not as good as having a proper field battle, but at least you have to mix your infantry with these buggers.

Not bad idea, but, I think you know those (almost) useless peasants eat food and decrease your morale.

^I think he meant reassign them after rescuing them and then immediately disband them.

You can also put all your infantry in a special groups (like 'infantry 2, whatever) and just let 'infantry' charge then (= all the peasants)

You don't even need to rescue them proper, you can reassign their group when they're still on the left side of the screen.
