When the 16th used to be in it's glorious state, we formed square and it was excellent. The outer rank of the square would block cavalry attacks, while the seconds rank of the square was on fire at will. This was back in mm prussia, but the point stands- the whole point of the formations (and indeed bracing) is just to force the enemy cavalry to think and hesitate- even if for a split second, whilst your allies blast the bajeezus out of them with muskets.
"The Lord is my light and my salvation- of whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life- of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear." ~ Psalms 27

Bracing is not useless! In real life, a lone infantryman would always be run down by even one cavalryman. It's when you combine them together and organize they are effective. That's why premature squares were always broken. You have to be ready to counter the charge. With today's linebattles, there so much hill and you don't see the cavalry until they are on you.
Even on a fully flat map cavalry would easily be able to run you down, the first few cav guys merely jump up the air in front of the square, breaks the bracing of the guys in front, ******** up the aim of the guys in the rear and confusing everyone. Then the guys behind come in and slash the guys who turned to look at the jumping cav guys in the back, and the guys who's brace is now screwed gets a sabre to the face.

The gunsmoke makes the whole square ineffective, people cant see shit, but the cavalry easily can. Going around a corner and slashing people from the side is a good way too. Squares work better here in NW than they did in MM, thats for sure. But its still horrendously ineffective.

Have you fought the Freikorps in your square formation?

Crouch, switch to melee mode, and do not look around too much.

aww <3 you haresus

But yeah, as a member of a cavalry regiment (Freikorp), I can definitely say that bracing is just a way to get yourself killed, if you do that in a square, we just ride along the sides and slice you down, the light sabre out ranges the brace let alone the heavy sabre. you're far better off just stabbing instead of attempting a brace.

When it comes to line battles and squares/bracing, we just think you're being a bit silly really you all sit there in a square whilst we ride around you, the cannons get great shots our lines can move unimpeded of your return shot and we can just ride around you and hit more valuable targets. So bracing in a square isn't really your strong suit.

I wasn't saying Bracing was useful, as it is not. I do not play NW much- was just referring to the MM days. I would normally deploy on reverse slopes- so we we're in the "dead zone" of enemy ordnance. The outer rank didn't just sit there like derptards, they blocked the attacks, I would also order a 'pulsating' charge, in which the square basically "expanded" to catch the cavalry off guard, take care of a few- then retreat back to the formation and try it again- also not that the main strength of the formation wasn't it's actual effectiveness, rather that when cavalry saw it- they didn't bother.

Well thats basicly grabing a piece of shit to throw it at your teammates...

Also, squares back then were derped too. Cav could just ride on the sides and catch people easily who were off guard, if one cav guy comes, they have to turn and face him, another one can easily come from behind and knock you over. You do claim to have it working, might be a big diffrance between the NA and Eu community (I belive I saw you on an NA server once...)
