thanks a bunch for the run-down, I was pretty confused on the different artillery guys as sometimes I would end up with the ramrod and sometimes start with the horse and cannon.

couple questions:
1. The manual mentions sappers can plant explosive boxes (page 31).  How do you do this?  can you only do it in certain areas or on certain maps?
2. How do officers/rank and file soldiers get picked?  I've never been an officer and never saw an option when picking classes to be one.
3. Is there a description of the main maps somewhere that show what each one is like?  I'm still trying to learn them, I really like one of the siege ones in which the attackers have to cross in boats to reach the fort.  Anywhere that has descriptions of each map so I know what they are all like before joining a game?

1. As a sapper/engineer pull out your construction hammer and right click. This should bring up a menu of things to build and you should see an explosive box somewhere.
2. If you pick your class at the left of the screen look at the bottom left to pick Ranker/Captain/Colour Guard/Musicians. It's in the same menu, but a different box.
3. Haven't the faintest idea. Maybe I'll add that in next.

thanks a lot, couple other questions that popped into my mind since yesterday

1. In sieges the walls of the forts collapse at a certain point so the attackers can storm them, do they collapse at a certain time or because they are getting bit by cannons/explosive charges?
2. I see flags planted in the ground a lot, are they just discarded or do they give the same buff or some other kind of benefit as when a color guard is using them.
3. I tried an engineer after I saw your reply to my post and dropped one but it didnt do anything, was killed shortly after.  Do you have to trigger it once it's on the ground?  and what are explosive charges meant to be used for?  they are too slow and close range for attacks except maybe as a trap if you put it near where enemies normally travel such as a breach in the walls.

1: Because the cannonballs hit them of course.
2: I don't know that one.  :|
3: If you dropped an explosive crate, you should see a little box popping up when you stand close to it, it should say ''ignite!''.
If you want to build something, select the hammer, hold down f and start hitting the object. When you want to dig a simple earthwork, select the spade, hold down f and start hitting the pile of dirt.

Hope it helped!  :D

Sincerely, AtheistOverlord.

Atheist did a pretty good job but:
1. Get hit by cannons or explosive charges do this REALLY well. Cannons take forever to break it down.
2. They are discarded by colour guard. I don't believe they give a buff on the ground, they must be picked up and held by someone.(anyone I think)
3. Mostly to break down defenses and walls. If you look at the box a little thing will come up saying "IGNITE!", just hold F when you look at this.

It says in the manual that "Light infantry are fast moving units", same with riflemen.

So I always assumed this was so, is it not?

I thought so but some said no. Maybe it means because of the light infantry flag bearer buff that increases run speed.

Getting someone to write you up a guide to shooting or melee for the current system in the game would also be great for new players i know when getting into cRpg and duels on native these sort of guides really helped me out. :)

Like tips and tricks on how to do well? I think I might make a video and just link it. But at the same time I don't wanna teach them how to beat me  :?

It's at the bottom of the first post. Or click on niftyeye's link. Same page.
