Starcraft also has a pretty cool one, so does the Brood War expansion.

"... The Core and the Arm have all but exhausted the resources of a galaxy in their struggle
for domination. Both sides now crippled beyond repair, the remnants of their armies continue
to battle on ravaged planets,  their hatred fueled by over four thousand years of total war."

Nobody ever made as good game intros and cut scenes as the folks behind Red Alert.

Oh yeah. They should've hired that guy for Oblivion instead of Captain Picard.
I don't see you complaining about Mount and Blade.
He is super-witty.

-- when anger overflows, the tongue wags unrestrained.
I am perfectly willing to change my mind on pretty much anything. But I require convincing arguments for that and I haven't seen any in this discussion yet.
I didn't even bother reading any further than that.

I do think Quake's intro cinematic is the one I've most enjoyed. Not the one that shipped with the game, the one that tells the whole story. (AKA the intro cinematic to the total conversion "Nehahra")
The Seal of Nehahra (Just shy of 4 hours) :P
Male, Finnish-going-on-Australian, of questionable intent, orientation, and sheep attraction.
Absolutely nothing about you is acceptable, but it works somehow. Like a car going backwards on the freeway, you get where you're trying to go eventually, but everyone is staring and keeping their distance.

My favourite intros:

Rise & Fall Civilisations at War
Rome Total War
Gothic
And epic intro of Call of Duty

Sorry, I can't post it with links, so you must see it yourselves ;)

I think nowadays games tend to used an immersive intro, not sure if that's the proper term, you know like the start of half life. Arkham city had a good intro that was hands-on.

Favorite intros...
Dawn of War, Dune 2. Parasite eve I liked due to the music. IIRC the version of system shock I played had no speech, watched it again with speech and it was pretty cool.

Well if you count those, I think Fallout 3 had a really good one when you don't know what the hell is going on. When you first step outside it really hits you
