Actually, like many military practices, there was a reason behind it. It's actually a stronger position for the wrist & the blade - holding your blade as a 'typical' thrust, out straight ahead of you, can have nasty consequences when using a sabre. As Lindybeige put it...

That man is a god!

This from a Cavalry Sword Manual. Granted it is a little later than the Napoleonic period. But still has relevance

"The saber is solely a weapon of offense and is used in conjunction with the other offensive weapon, the horse. In all training, the idea of speed must be conserved. No direct parries are taught, because at the completion of a parry the enemy is already beyond the reach of attack. The surest parry is a disabled opponent."

"He is a unit in a line rushing on the enemy with the one idea of riding him down and transfixing him with his rigid saber, held at the position of charge saber"

"As the trooper extends his arm and body to the utmost, he should rotate his hand to the left so that when fully extended the edge of the saber will be up and the finger nails to the right. The blade should be at the height of the eye, the line of sight parallel to the direction of the blade. The body should be bent forward so as to be nearly horizontal, the trooper making every effort to reach as far to the front as possible."

Would have thought you would turn the blade horizontal so that is would have a greater chance of slipping through the ribs and not getting caught on them when it was pulled out, i know that cavalry equipped with straight sabers were taught to do that when charging enemy cavalry.

LindyBeige!

He's trailed off somewhat on uploading weapons and "lindy rants" videos as of late, the last bunch of videos he uploaded where of an odd dancing event in norway that I could not give two nipples for.

Hopefully he'll get back to the weapons "points" and rants again.

A great fellow he be!

I'd really love this feature, if added (as part of a sword-cav regiment :D), and was thinking of maybe adding another feature to this, to make the charge more 'chargey'.
Maybe, if you press C (or whichever key would be used), you shout, extend your sword/sabre, and give your horse a little speed boost, for as long as you hold your sword down (which would stop after a moment, just like lance couching), which then needs to 'recharge' for some time, like the lance after couching.
Seriously though, you must be mistaking "Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord" with "Mounting Babes 2: Bonerlord"; both in open DreamBeta.

Only that infantry dude has a thousand other infantry dudes right behind him, all with bayonets levelled towards that charge.

If you dont have a condom, try to pull out early. If this doesnt work, turn it into a legitimate rape, because the female body has ways of shutting that down.
