On the oldest Mount and Blade there is...
« on: May 01, 2012, 12:45:59 PM »
I'm talking about M&B 0.2xx, aka. Warrider.

Just downloaded and played a round of it today, and my impression is:

* HOLY COW, THE MUSIC. v 1.0xx and 1.1xx WISH they had music as badass as the old Warrider.
* Proper plate-armored Swadian knight? Scout parties? Men-at-arms in every caravans?
* The skill that influences party size is based on INT rather than CHA?
* Ironflesh increases HP by percentage rather than a flat amount?
* Horse charges actually matters? You get thrown aside when a horse jumps you at full speed?

Why couldn't the end product be more like the early beta?

Oh, and BTW, I am absolutely in LOVE with the original town song, The Great Hall. Is this music free-to-use today?

Started playing M&B at v0.96 and have never played Warrider before, but it sure sounds interesting. BTW, I am also one of the few admirers of the old music. It was one of reasons that made me love the game.

Horse charges have been decreased immensely since those early days.
Back then you could trample down a party of 20 bandits on foot with a warhorse.

Yeah, there was a lot to like in the early versions.
I don't see you complaining about Mount and Blade.

What I'm really wondering is why they didn't keep the old music.
I have seen youtube comments on the videos which have these songs, which say the music sounds like some tracks from other games.

Perhaps in the first version Armagan and Ipek simply took some decent music from other games, and then removed them when they began selling the game's newer versions?

Huh, that makes sense.

Oh well. I was meaning to ask who should I go to to ask whether I could use that music in an independent project or not, but this means it's not possible.

The old M&B music is royalty-free stock music that the devs used before they could afford to have proper music made. You can listen to samples here: http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com/mystic-journey.html M&B used A Losing Battle, Ambushed, Reluctant Hero, Requiem, Silent Intruder, The Great Hall, The Pilgrimage, and Triumph. Here's some info from the company that produced it: http://www.flyinghands.com/prod/se6006.html
I could swear I've heard the Ambushed track in Severance: Blade of Darkness.

I could swear I've heard the Ambush track in Severance: Blade of Darkness.
A very similar tune is also played in Dark Colony (an old RTS game or PC).

Listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwtMfm8E3Q8

I don't know, perhaps the composers used the same sampler and that's why their tunes sound similar.

Yeah, that does sound incredibly similar. For comparison, the Severance track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Prnb1RYLZI Probably made using the same software. And the guy who made that software was clearly inspired by Anvil of Crom from Conan.

As for Ambushed, here's the Severance music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIUF2X41YaM Compared to M&B's Ambushed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NfBWJStQ9M&t=0m22s Not actually identical, but very very similar.

Yes, it's clearly the same sampler/synth/software, or whatever it is. The rhythm used in the DC track and first Severance track is absolutely the same and the piano sound they used in all of these music is the same. I'm sure I've heard many other variations of these music on crappy b-movies and tv series as well.

It's like the door opening sound of Doom I & II, or the scream of the falling Stormtrooper in Star Wars IV (or the Haradrim soldier in the LoTR-RoTK), they use the same sound effects in all kinds of places. :)

PS. Perhaps it's just me, but despite the use of the same sound package, the music of Severance sounds terrible when compared to the other two.

Well it's game music, it doesn't work properly outside the game. I've played the hell out of that game and the music fits it very well.

Old m&b (warrider) also had those undead quests and some quest to kill king Harlaus. Does anybody know anything more, how were they, so maybe they could be implemented in current game?
