Turning off female characters on servers
« on: April 28, 2012, 01:40:37 PM »
Is there a way to stop female characters joining a server? To me the female characters in the game spoil the authenticity of the era this game is trying to depict.
There is nothing more annoying than hearing a girls voice scream "angriff!" while charging the enemy and seeing braids sticking out under the headgear.
An other really irritating factor is that it's probably mostly guys that play as female characters, I am sure some girls also play this game but they are a very small minority.

I am not advocating banning women from servers, just female characters. I also understand that most server admins and players don't care about this, therefore my question is
if it's possible to turn off female characters on my own dedicated server?

The Deluge entirely removed female characters from the game. I don't think you can stop female characters from entering a server, though.

Although i agree that women dosen't fit in the era, it is a game after all, and the girl gamers, should be able to play their own sex. But no i do not think you can remove it from your own server :)

IF you do not like them just pretend they are men with long hair and higher pitched, feminine, voices.

I find the sounds they make when you insert a certain "bayonet" in a female most entertaining.

Hmmm, that's not good news. So an admin would have to manually enforce it on the server at all time. I remember The Deluge not having female characters in the beginning but didn't they change that later?

I don't buy the argument with NW being a game therefore all girls should be able to play as female characters. If one would apply that logic to all games we would not have any authentic historic or simulation games around, even sport games would not be authentic. This game is depicting a historic era where women where not present on the battlefield and NW is doing a very good job except the female characters.

Anyways the topic is not about if we should have female characters in the game or not, they are unfortunately already in and I doubt that they will be removed. The topic is about if it's possible to remove them from a server, as it looks now it's not possible. Maybe we could have an option for that in the future?

EDIT:

@Vincenzo
Do you mean in game now or in real life?  :D

Well at least it's not a definite not...
I guess that the admin tools together with server rules that will have to do.

Unless there are file consistency checks, wouldn't simply overwriting the female sounds with the male ones clientside solve a considerable part of this "issue"? They'd still look like females, but you'd only really notice with the ones you kill up close.

If possible, this could also be taken a step further, replacing all female models/textures with male ones, but don't know if that's doable/feasible.

In any case, options for cosmetics  like this should be clientside, there's no need to force others to have their game look like your preferences...(CS:S has a neat set of cvars that lets you set the model(s) used for each team, for instance)

Women joining the army by pretending to be men is not actually historically inaccurate, it was surprisingly common. They would be thrown out if discovered, though.

Thx for a great answer jackx!
I have been thinking about turning down the volume on all female character sounds, but your option sounds even better! Maybe I will give it a try, the only thing I am afraid of is that switching the textures on characters is far out of my area of expertise...
