Epic stories of Vikingr battles!
« on: April 27, 2012, 11:33:18 PM »
Greetings everyone! Skellgrimm here!

I figured it was a good idea to share a story of a great battle in vikingr in tradtional viking style!

The morning mist cleared from the ground, the sun gleaming off the surface of the nearby lake.
Men came, first as a trickle then a stream, all mounted and in fine armour, Those of the Rus Kingdoms and thos who follow Duke William, Bastard of Normandy.
The horses' breath steamed in the cold morning air. Spearpoints and maille glinting in the morning sun.
Two bow-shots apart from each other the armies stood. Men muttered prayers to their gods, and I, Skellgrimm, felt my knuckles grip around my spear haft.
Our leader and lord, Moeckerkalfie, warrior who followed the god of the seax raised his war horn and blew, the sound cutting cleanly through the crisp air.
And so we charged. For our homes. For our families. For our honour. For blood.
For a moment all air stood still as if the very gods bid it stand back so as not to interrupt the fight that would rend the air with mens screams, sheets of blood and steel ripping flesh.
The lines closed. Spears found flesh of man and beast. Screams tore the air. My spear found itself buried into a norman shield, the haft snapped and useless.
I saw many fall. Sword brothers I had known for years. Normans who had found no glory but only death on that field.
I gripped my axe with white knuckles, turning my horse to face the carnage that still continued unabaited in the long grass slick with the blood of the fallen.
And then I saw him. The bastard himself, clad in mail from face to foot, his armour sheeted in red and his sword slick with the life of those whose flesh the steel had bit like wolf into spring lamb.
I spurred my horse onward, shield in my left hand, axe gripped tight as Thor himself would take his hammer to a giant's skull.
A norman spear glanced off my shield, the blade sliding up to my helmet and scraping the steel as I swung my axe towards the rider, dropping his arm and forcing a scream from him.
Crimson stained his horses flank as he screamed, the mail on his shoulder split and blood coursing down his arm swinging limply by his side.
The bastard stood over one of my brothers, his sword held high, ready to split flesh and bone, to strike down one whom I called brother.
My axe swung.
Shock ran up my arm.
Broken mail rings and shards of bone flew into the sky like the ravens that circled high above the field where the choosers of the slain were lain low with brave warriors bound for Odin's hall.
And the Bastard was dead, his head cleft from his shoulders as his body collapsed to the ground, the earth drinking in the gore flowing from his neck.
I wheeled my horse around, and leapt from the saddle to the body of my foe. I took his head from the earth and held it high enough for even Hodr to see whom i had struck down.
I let out a cry that would inspire my sword brothers to fight all the harder, and shake the will to stay on the field of battle from my enemies that even then tried to sow death in that field of gore.
I rode with that head grapsed in my hand, the hair slick from blood and the face still frozen in the scream of battle.
And then I saw the last of my brothers cut down by a man the size of which I have not seen since. I pitied the horse he rode for even the most broad would have struggled to hold his bulk.
I spurred my horse towards the giant, casting aside the head of his commander and taking the axe that had cleft the head from the Norman swine's neck in my bloodied hand.
But I would not anyone claim that I had beaten a warrior by unfair means. I dismounted my horse and roared a challenge to the brute that opposed me.
A savage grin split his face, yellow teeth bared and he charged, his sword and shield moving as if nothing, and I ran to meet him, even though I saw my death on his sword.
The blade sliced down toward my shoulder, but I caught the blade on my shield, splintering the wood and sending impact down my arm.
I swung my axe, the edge nicking his helmet and smashing down onto his shoulder. He roared in pain, punching his shield into my chest, and I felt my ribs crack.
Blood dripped from my mouth as I staggered back, the pain in my chest like a hammer thrust into my ribs. The norman I faced limped too, his shoulder spilling crimson over the fine tunic he wore.
He roared in pain and anger, charging towards me as an entraged bull, but I stepped to his side and swung my axe before he could bring his sword down to my head.
The ground shook as he fell, my blade stuck in the back of his neck, blood spurting freely from the wound. I grimaced from the pain spreading from my ribs and tore the axe free.
Looking to my horse, I saw in the grass the head of the leader of my foes. It would fetch a high price back home.

Enjoy!

I was thinking of starting a Viking-ish, very fictional novel I started a year ago. This is the Introduction-
