Some things to expect in the coming weeks of NW.
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:56:34 AM »
As with the launch of any new game there a few things you should expect to happen on the first day. Don't be alarmed, just be patient as everything will be worked out soon enough.

1. A massive influx of new (and returning) players to community. With any launch the first few weeks are going to be packed and the general skill level of players will plummet due to the arrival of the masses. Please be aware that new players are the life blood of any game. Don't be a dick to the new guys, keep them around. Answer their questions and be polite. Use this as an opportunity to get some new blood in to your regiments (if you need/want them) and welcome them with open arms in to what is hopefully a long lasting distraction in to our probably very hectic and busy lives.

2. A lack of general server space. Because of the influx of new players it may become hard to find a spot in a server to play in. If you do manage it, expect some latency issues as it will be a very heavy load on the servers. Be patient, and enjoy the next installment of mount and blade.

3. A drop in the general skill level of the population. Newbs are noobs, don't hate them, love them. Noobs are often the most dangerous foe you can fight because of their unpredictability. They are also most often really in to the game they just bought and are willing to listen to every piece of advice you give. Remember that some of these players will become long lasting members of the community, a good first impression on them could be the start of a long lasting friendship.

4. Teamkilling. It's going to happen a lot more in the next couple weeks than has happened in the last year. Because of the new faction, new uniforms, new classes, and new mechanics that the majority of us are unused to teamkills will happen. Prepare to be blown up by friendly sappers, killed by new players who don't know the difference between uniforms, and mutilated by vertical thrusts for the next several days. Stay calm, these are (hopefully) accidents and will become less and less common as the DLC ages.

5. Trolling. People troll. Especially in games that have just been released. Take chat with a grain of salt and don't be sucked in to idiots attempting to get a laugh out of players in a game they'll probably only play once or twice and then get banned in. The retards will be weeded out systematically by admins who will most assuredly be very active over the next couple months. Trolling unfortunately will never be completely eradicated, but soon enough our beloved home servers will be back to their good ol' normal self.

6. Complaining. This will be the scourge of the dead chat. While people are dead they are going to complain about everything changed or new that they are unaccustomed to until they get used to it. The vertical thrust, sappers, music, accuracy of weapons, reloading on the move. People will complain about everything until their complainers are all dried up. Don't get sucked in to their rants. Sit back and enjoy the game yourself and stay cool. Nothing ruins a fun launch like getting irritated by someone else who won't shut up, so don't forget there is an ignore function in game that will mute their chat so you don't see it.

I'm sure there are more and I'm just tired and not thinking. Feel free to add to my thoughts. See you guys in NW.

A very good list, just one point: what reloading on the move? ;) Also the accuracy is next to unchanged, atleast that is how I have felt it in the beta.

What I think is something that cannot be stressed enough though, is patience. Patience with the new players, patience with changes. It's a large change to both the demography and the gameplay, and as such things will take a while before they settle into place. So before you complain about features or changes you should consider if it's because you're unfamiliar with it or because it is actually bad.

exactly newfag idiots people will complain that you can't move while reloading
Kinda seems a bit misleading to label this mod (B) for both Multi and Single player if it doesn't do multiplayer yet.

Nice list there.

I think we can be a bit more optimistic in some of those areas, for example: apparently will be some auto-kick feature that will deal with teamkilling sprees quicker than a normal admin would. I think these will be editable in the server options (e.g. more than # TKs in a round = kick or temp.ban). These should make it easier for us admins to keep the servers clean.

I'll certainly be very active on the DLC in the coming weeks and can assure that I'll do my very best to keep the servers running smoothly and cleanly.

Great post Littleguy, I'm totally getting excited for this release :D

Returning players? More than likely. A massive influx of brand new players? I highly doubt it. Seriously, this game has had NO advertising at all and less than a month of being public knowledge. The only people spreading the word are members of the MM & Warband community (including a few video makers like Diplex and Ripper) and a couple of posts on Reddit (that afaik didn't make it very far up the front page). There has been no advertising on any of the digital stores either, while GamersGate does have it for pre-order I haven't seen it on the front page.

Even when it is released on the 19th, I'll be surprised thousands of people see it on Steam and go OMG NEW MULTIPLAYER NAPOLEONIC MUSKETS ONLY DLC FOR WARBAND!!!

EDIT: Although I guess it does only take a few hundred or so people to flood the servers anyway, and of course Littleguy's post still stands regardless of how many new players there are. I just really don't see there being a huge flood.

Laggy servers can make or break a player's experience and interest in a game, and lead to some very bad word of mouth. Hopefully lag won't be much of an issue and people set their server limits to a size it can handle well!

I would also like to add, for the benefit of people running servers, add a list of controls for using cannons, crouching and the like for the benefit for the new guys. That can also make or break new players on NW.

The tutorial gives quite a nice intro into that!
