Personally, I'm in favor of more 2D art.  With the way conversations generally work, it comes across as silly seeing someone with a frozen expression occasionally bounce around on his or her feet.  It doesn't feel like a conversation.  While portraits and the like are static, a well drawn one can carry far more personality than Warband character models.

That being said, if quality images isn't feasible to get drawn, stick with 3D.
