This weekend the one of either Invasion servers has always ranged between 20 and 30, which seems pretty decent to me.

That isn't true, I've seen someone hiding behind a table on the map with the hill and the stairs, they are against a Janissary standing by the doors into the hall, they stand up from the table and shoot the Janissary with the Janissary shooting back killing them both.

Can anyone explain the above to me?
Because every time I go on the main invasion server, there is a group of fanatics who think that an entire group of pikemen is a good idea.
Can someone tell me why this is?

Blasphemy. If anything, the game lacks people willing to play pikemen.

I played as pikeman today. I just didn't bring any of those silly novelty toothpicks.
