Well the problem, as I see it, with some of the current maps, is that they have little flaws in them that can severely harm balance and enjoyment. For example, the map with the infamous tower (accessed by a ladder) would be better if there was either more than one way to access the tower (preferably give the tower an interior with a ground floor door to break down, but that is surely a lot of modelling work) or put the tower (and obviously the rest of the little fort) equidistant from the two spawn points. As it stands, one team is very close to the fort, and despite there being a little village near the second team's spawn, it is never sees more action than a rare cavalry skirmish because it has no walls and the fort is clearly the more significant defensive position. Thus most of the map is wasted and the first team gets a large advantage, especially if they decide to camp in the tower (and why not, the enemy will use it otherwise and it is a big advantage).
For a mod with teams of equal size, such imbalances are a problem. There are of course other maps where one side is gifted with a strong defensive position, such as La Haye Sainte. On this one, I find much of the defensive work isn't even fun, because there is that ladder onto the roof tops for people to go dancing around on. Try running on a pitched roof in real life and you are likely to slide off it to your death or fall through it, especially if it is made of straw/hay as the barn is. And yet people are able to shoot over the apex of the pitched roofs and then duck down again, it is silly. Not to mention that in real life all the buildings would have accessible interiors, and the enemy could shoot through the tiles/hay from beneath or set the building on fire. Roof tops aren't generally a good place to fight from if the enemy can access the building or shoot at you from all sides, but these disadvantages mean nothing in a computer game. The barn itself would make a more realistic and, in my opinion, far more enjoyable defensive position (and sometimes good little fights do take place here) but the little windows are not positioned well enough to be used to shoot into or out of the barn. It seems like a position wasted, a shame (is it a native building or custom made? The shame is more if someone has put the work into it and not got it quite right).
One of the older maps, the one where there is a wooden fort with only a gate left ajar for access and indestructible walls, is of course very imbalanced. It relies on the sportsmanship of the defending side to make it interesting by coming out rather than camping until the enemy has been atrophied by cannon fire. Charging into the fort simply isn't viable; it is hard enough to wriggle through the gate one man at a time, and the gate is coverable from the rampart. Updating this fort to use the fantastic destructible material of other buildings in the mod would solve the problem, and replacing the gate with openable (by defenders) and destructible doors would be a further improvement.
So in conclusion, I would prefer it if the current maps with balance and gameplay problems such as the ones I have detailed above were either amended or scrapped and replaced with new maps. If extra maps are added they would be welcome, but much more so if they can avoid the issues of existing maps and provide a fun match.
P.S. I don't mean to denigrate the work done by the makers of these maps, they have certainly provided a lot of fun for me and many other M&M players I am sure, and I can appreciate how hard it must be to try and forsee how a match will play out on your map.
