Mount&Blade: Warband > 1812-1815 Napoleonic [B]

Here's bit of feedback after I decided to give the mod a go, pretty much played as some random French guy whom tries to just earn his livelihood by poking someone in the rear w/ medium difficulty. 1812 B3 running of course.

-Firearms needs some tweaking. I don't mind the general accuracy, but their trajectory and velocity should be slightly improved. I can understand the reasoning to prevent certain AI dickmoves, but unless you are shooting at point blank range, the odds are you will miss a target coming straight at you unless you have insane profiency in crossbows and it's closer to point blank range. One time I had around ~70 guys on top of a slope holding fire against some British cavalry. When I finally gave the order (accounting the order delay as well)... only one of them hit, and during the next minute or so my entire line was pretty much slaughtered because they couldn't hit against around 20 horsemen at less than ~20 yards of distance, and it was not an isolated incident. Same thing has happened quite often even, and on the other hand the same problem tends to make riflemen, jägers and such almost a joke, because I have no trouble charging in frontally and count on how often they will miss. Even if I'm right next to them. Actually even those few cases I have deliberately fought on foot in gunnery duel riflemen and jägers tend to be quite underwhelming.

I reinstalled Warband altogether at one point to eliminate the possibility of messed mod installation, but even after that it's pretty much the same.

-Economy is bit too harsh for starters. You have little to no income to support your starting party in the long run, and while I enjoy challenge I pretty much spend the entire first year of in-game time playing merchant just to build up enough money to support 10-15k+ expenses a week to feed my company once I became Napoleon's vassal. Alternatively the price of goods should be slightly altered, mostly when it comes to food and such.
-Some of the battle maps could possibly do better with less objects. I really like the new maps, but in any forested enviroment the AI is absurdly crippled with cavalry. It is realistic in some ways, but one time I won a solo battle against 120 British (of which ½ at least was cavalry) because I can avoid most obvious potholes and obstacles in forest. AI could not, and fastforward fairly long battle of attrition where I kept swiping horses and their riders until they routed.
-IMHO profiency gain rate, if possible to change, should be lower. Ignoring the tricky trajectory and velocity of firearms once you have 300+ crossbow profifiency even your handgun becomes semi-sniper and your regular musket\carbine becomes a real sniper rifle. Reminded me of WFAS sniping fun though.
-Perhaps tactics (or alternatively AI formations) should be slightly altered. The mod definitely is a great improvement over Native, but most of the commands you can give to your troops simply do not work. Cavalry refuses to form wedge, most of your soldiers can't form a square or so. Perhaps it's just inevitable issue with the engine but anyway.

Other than those and some others which escapes my head right now, it's quite interesting and enjoyable mod.  8-)

Hi, thanks for trying out the module and give your feedback on it.

About weapon stats for firearms:
Frankly i can't say i'm disappointed with the current accuracy, as i'm enjoying a module which, obviously is set to enjoy ... the modder at first :p. Then, i understand what you said about charging cavalry suffering almost no casualties and there is something i'd like to share with you guys.

During the war with napoleon, a russian platoon once fired their volley on charging french cavalry only to realize afterwards that no horsemen nor horse were hit and eventually the russians stayed and courageously fought back the french cavalry. So it's not that impossible !

I think the current accuracy is enough, it prevents lethal firefights which would kill the interest of charging enemies, or make charging troops decimated long before they hit the enemy lines which is both unbalanced and unrealistic. Still, players should give their opinion on that.
It's also possible that some troops like officers or sapeurs can't be killed with a shot even at point blank range because they have a lot more health ! It happened to me a lot of time.

Economy, troop wages, loots etc is something i'm working on and will be adressed everytime we release something for the module so it may not be an issue for you anymore on further versions.

Maps are bothering me, especially the awful number of trees. I added a file from the module polished landscape, a little .txt which reduce drastically the number of trees/rock spawned on random battlefields and it seems to work so far so i might keep it.

I'm not english so i don't really know what you mean by IMHO ... ? However, having a crossbow proficiency of 250 is not that hard in the long run and can be enough to make some very good kill with most firearms, especially carbines and rifles which have a bonus in accuracy to reflect their effectiveness as a skirmisher weapon (dragoons, jagers etc).

Again, melee combat must not be overwhelmed by over-effective firearms to keep balance and the interest of equipping the player with both weapon types. It's easy to get yourself stuffed with a baker rifle and 3 stack of cartridge, but it's not realistic and reallism is still part of the module's objectives. Soldiers had a firearm and a bayonet, for nco's and officers sometimes a short sword, and this must be the case in this module.

Formations are scripted and i can't change them since i'm not good a coding things. I'm using them myself but tend to use simple lines of different troop category to make my battle lines, instead of using formations, as it's faster to set up ... I know this sounds dull, but i just don't really like how the formations are working. However i like the special orders which really works great and i'm using them a lot !

Sorry if i didn't understand what you asked, it's a bit confusing in your message. Are you refering of the model shown in marketplace for firearms and such ? This can be changed, it's just time consuming to change the positions of each guns, rename it, add it back ingame and set it as the marketplace model instead of the active weapon meshe.

Can be done, just didn't bother with this at the moment, maybe later ! If it doesn't answer your question please try to be more precise in your sentences if you can.

Thanks for support and for the feedback !

(Btw IMHO = In My Humble Opinion)

What I mean is perhaps just very small touch, as right now they feel slightly too much like crossbows rather than firearms, but perhaps it's just a necessary weasel.

Good to hear.

Speaking of which M&B Napoelonic Wars DLC source code was made avaible for modders. Any plans to port the mod to NW by any chance, purely asking for curiosity's sake?

Keryyn:
I am strongly against the DLC NW because in my opinion this is another way of stealing people's money over a former free module's idea and cultural / historical assets which should be, by right, totally free to use. Why should i pay to use a picture of an imperial flag from my own country's history ?

Therefore i'm not going to suggest poomtang or vympel or anyone working on 1812 to try and port some stuff from NW nor to port the module 1812 into NW and i apologize if this might bother some players. Here you will be able to use most of the resources to make your own stuff once it's released as long as you ask permissions to use out of respect for the time spent and the dedication to make it playable ingame.

A module is something everyone, or at least as many people as possible should be able to play and it's somewhat more challenging to create stuff and improve it than taking things from other modules. Of course it helps, and we already did that to get some things we just couldn't do ourselves, but this was from free modules and resources.

However, NW is an exception i just can't stand so i won't take anything from it except concepts / ideas to improve realism etc, but no porting nor merging with it's content whatever it might be. I want 1812 to stay a free module, improved by people who want to make it better using their skills and honing them in the process.

Still, this is my personnal opinion, i cannot speak for poomtang or vympel...
