Dimensions of battle maps

(1/1)

nijis:

Has anyone tried to estimate the size of the M&B battlefields in meters/yards? I'm going to try to create a few towns that were roughly their actual historic size, so I'd like to get a good sense of the size of the starting maps.

Based on the speed of a jogging character, I guessed that the length of a scene with x and y set to maximum is about a quarter mile (about 400 meters), which would mean that the dimensions of an ordinary randomly generated battle scene in Native would be about 160-170 meters. This was a highly unscientific way to calculate the distance, as I had to guess at the character's jogging speed, so if anyone else has come up with a better estimate I'd quite like to hear.

zdazzle:
Ok i know this is dumb sounding but, (not sure if it actually works). Have the guy jog from one end of the map to the other. But instead of guessing speed count how many steps he takes. And at the same time record how long it takes him to get there.

so im guessing, not really sure but heres an example.    700²(that’s steps/feet there)+60²(how long it takes)=x²

So then you just find the square root of the 2 numbers added together.

Sorry if it confuses you more.

threre might be another way too. find the length going one way (lets call it straight) and then find the length going another way(sideway).

so do    Straight²+Sideway²=x²

that should give you the Diagonal

if that doesnt help sorry Diagonal

If anyone else wants to add anything feel free, im not sure if this would actually work

nijis:
Actually, distance per stride multiplied by number of strides should yield approximate distance in real life, but I'm pretty sure that troops "slide" along the map and the running animation is just cosmetic.

It suddenly occurs to me that one could use the 14m ramp scene prop as a ruler. Will give that a try and see what I get.

zdazzle:
Ok that is what i thought since it was a game.

Ingolifs:
You could use 20 metre borders to that effect too. It's also more efficient.
